Both my 90's, the TCU does not ground the TPS trans side. Brown is fine, White has intermittent issues of not up-shifting. PO of Brown waz sold a TCU around 2001. Just rambling!

I will pick up a jug of Dex3 on the way to work tomorrow. If I get a chance I will drop the pan and report my findings.

It's something I need to do anyways.

Maybe time for another AW4?

I've rebuild several automatic transmissions, what kind of beast is this?

They're tough as nails.

You sure some bozo didn't put ATF+4 fluid in it previously?

I've had it since 2011, and I'm the second owner. The P.O. didn't really take care of it, but I'm pretty sure I would have killed it by now if they did. That and I did the hole drain and fill then drive 5000, and repeat ordeal with Dex3.

Maybe throw some snake oil in it. Lucas saved a TH350 a for me a while back (or just prolonged it until I got rid of it)

Second gear is fine. Used it to own a mountain road today. The problem is that the solenoid is slow to engage. This is just an educated guess from what I have been reading over the past few nights about solenoids going out. Funny thing is my TCC solenoid is going bad too from what I have read, I just haven't worried about it. I am going to order a 3pack of solenoids and just throw them at the transmission. I have done my research and testing, and hell they are cheaper than tossing in a rebuilt AW4

I replaced my solenoids last night, did not fix the problem. Did fix my otherissue with the mushyness of the shift.

It will not shift until 25they mph at 0 throttle. I have to let off the throttle or it will stay in first. If im below 35 in second gear and give anything over 25% throttle it will downshift into first. Thi bs is going to kill my engine. Im going to wire in those switches again today and try to manual shift again.

Test the TPS on the Trans side before anything else.

However, the automatic TPS also has a square four-wire connector, clearly embossed with the letters A,B,C, and D. It only uses three wires and provides information to the Transmission Control Module. THIS SQUARE FOUR WIRE CONNECTOR IS USED FOR TRANSMISSION/SHIFTING RELATED ISSUES ONLY. First off, DO NOT UNPLUG THE CONNECTORS !! Key ON, measure voltage between "A" positive and "D" ground by back-probing the connector. Note the voltage. This is your REFERENCE voltage. Back-probe the connector at wires "B" and "D". Measure the voltage. This is your OUTPUT voltage. Your OUTPUT voltage needs to be eighty-three percent of your REFERENCE voltage. For example 4.8 volts X .83=3.98 volts. Adjust the TPS until you have achieved this percentage. If you can't, replace the TPS and start over. So, if you have an automatic equipped XJ your TPS has two sides--one side feeds the ECU, and the other side feeds the TCU.

I checked the tps (square plug) again and all is good. I did that just a few minutes ago. Full story though is yesterday i replaced my TPS with another "known good" TPS from my pile.

Would it make sense to check the output value at the tcm connector as well?

Thanks again for the help.

I have not said anything about this because I thought it didn't matter.

A few years back my XJ was stolen. During the time it was gone, #2 injector leaked and caught fire. The result burned up my engine harness, among other things. The only harness I could find was a 1989 with the dredded C101. I went through the connections again to make sure they are good. I know the TPS trans side wires pass through there. My grounds are good, and voltmeter verified.

Just wanted to add that into the messpile.
