You can go with 30's without trimming, but they will rub slightly.Rule of thumb is 3" lift to clear 31's for optimum performance. If you want big tires you will have to lift it.Otherwise, purchase a set of 235/75/15's,and call it good.Good luck

Her ya go, this my 99'. I have 30x9.50 with a 1.5" budget boost and no rub. My fender flares are removed and my fenders are trimmed. My tires are Treadwright mud terrains on bfg carcasses. The tires cost 420 bucks shipped to my home. That was for 5 matching tires. Paid 80 bucks to get them mounted. Hope this helps. Use the search function here and look up "cut and folded fenders".

I have 235/75/15R Cooper S/T (A M&S tire) on a stock suspension. They just fit. With out any rubbing. But I wouldn't want to catch any air with it. Recommend size was 225/75/15. 235's while not fit in the factory spare location, and still shut the hatch. Unless you want to punch out the glass, when you shut it. In fact they look a hair big for the opening.(See pic's in photo album)

I have 30's on mine with stock suspension and they fit perfect. They fill the wheel wells nicely and don't rub. My friend tried stuffing 31's under his '89 and that ended up with him completely ripping the flare off while turning through an intersection. The look on the lady's face who was driving next to us was priceless though.

more back spacing would mean tucked in... less back spacing would mean sticking out. You generally want a rim with less back spacing than stock. I think stock is 5.25". Anytime going to a bigger tire, I'd try to switch to a rim with 4.5" of back spacing or less. My 40 dollar a piece crager soft 8's have a 4 inch back spacing.

I agree with zachsxj I currently have 30's on my 2 door stock and I can't do too much playing due to the fact that Im so low. So go for 30's or a lift.

I'm calling BS. All the way. many people have successfully fit 30s on a stock XJ without issues.

As for being able to fit a spare in the factory location? I have a 31x10.50 in the factory location secured with a ratchet strap and waddaya know I can put my back seat all the way back AND close my hatch without issue. I'm willing to bet that with a squeeze I could fit a 32 back there as I still have another 1.5-2" of space to work with
