I dunno man, that seems kinda odd that you're running 31" tires w/ 4.5" of lift and rubbing. I'm probably not gonna be much help in that arena though.... my fenders are trimmed, I have a 3.5" lift, 32" tires, and 4" bumpstops w/ the rubber snubber missing on both sides. Good rule of thumb, I guess you could say though is to add bumpstops equal to the amount of lift you have. Gotta figure the bumpstops were set up from the factory so in order to get back to the bumpstops functioning properly with 4.5" of lift, you need AT LEAST 4" of additional bumpstop.
This is the best picture I could find... but the upper bumpstop cups are being hidden by my swaybar.
As you can see though, plenty of travel. I don't think I've ever hit the stops during normal road driving.
They didn't used to rub with an 1" less bumpstop, but like you said the fulcrum and with one side dropping all the way to the bottom of a 12" shock it crams the other really high and I don't have anything cut off of the jeep fender wise.
Went camping this weekend - Western Slope near Gateway, Colorado just across the border from Utah. Great camping - XJ got over 16.5 MPG going through the Rockies, fully loaded inside, and a little bit of wheeling. Cruise speed was 85 mph at ~3100 rpm, 65mph at ~2800rpm up the grades
Cheers!

00 is at 171000 and running strong.
Most recent ones after I got some new 33x10.50 BFG KM2s and installed my new Rusty's 4.5" coils and 1.5" rear shackles. Had to go see how it flexed right after the install.
A little better without the stupid coil spacers installed.

Just a personal preference is all. I put a set of the 33x12.50s on one time just to see how they would fit and with the current lift they would rub really bad at full turn. So I decided to stick with 10.50s.
