Default Hello

Hello all
My names Chris from England, just joined the forums and thought i better introduce my self before i attempt to extract knowledge from yourselves. HELLO. Lol. Any way i have a 2003 grand cherokee 2.7 crd. It has started to black smoke on idle and on low revs, it isn't constant smoke just a rythmic puff as if it's only happening on 1 cylinder, the engine is smooth as silk and doesn't appear to be missing or lumpy, Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum. In the U.S. we dont see too many CRD's in fact they are pretty rare or at least around here. Somebody with CRD knowledge will see this and hopefully post something for you though. I am pretty familiar with diesels though and if you see black smoke that is a sign of over fueling/excessive fuel or simply incomplete combustion along with not enough air.

I would start with the basics like checking codes, autoparts store around here can do it for free, they also sell the OBD-2 scanners pretty cheap too. Post codes up here if you have any. Next look look at you air filter, a restricted filter can cause some black smoke on accel. I am not saying your turbo is going out but a low boost can cause black smoke too (insufficient air). Intercooler boots leaking or coming off/apart.

Seems what little knowledge I have about the CRD is the crankcase breather tube overtime emits crankcase fumes back through the engine along with EGR gasses. This eventually gunks up the intake passages, swirl chambers and plates, and swirl motors can fail. Seems like this could cause smoke too.

thanks for the advice, i stripped the whole intake system out today, can find no leaks of any kind, pressure tested the intercooler and checked the breather and turbo, again all ok, any more ideas guys? no engine light illuminated.

Do you know if the swirl motors work or if the plates move?

Hi all,
Just joined the forum. My name is Alan and i am thinking about getting a Grand Cherokee MK II. They look a fantastic vehicles, and as we are caravanners we are looking at the 4.0ltr or 4.7ltr lpg ones. But we know absolutley nothing about them, sounds daft i know. Have read a few adds, but i really need to know everything about them before we take the plunge to get one. You know what i mean all those sort questions newbies ask.

Best Regards
Alan & Nicola

P.S. Even the pitfall and bad points if any...
