This guy is seriously starting to **** me off. My rear passenger side stock flare will not stay attached. I have already lost one just driving down the road. I did not even realize it had fallen off! After a replacement and several random stops on the road picking up this one, I have had it. Just when you think that suckers in place and not going anywhere I hear the grinding of plastic being shredded in my tire. Followed by a swift curb jump, U turn and a quick park job, then a running retrieval.
So my question is, obviously, has anyone had this problem? Anyone have any ideas on how to get her stay where she belongs? (aside from just throwing some screws threw it)

By the way if its any difference to anyone. My xj is a 97. 4 Door.

 

rip them OFF! then cut your fenders

 

I removed the rotted attachment brackets, drilled my flares, then used 1/4-20 bolts with washers to re-mount using the holes in the fender.

I like it, and they're not coming off without some significant force.

X2...I didn't do this exact thing, but I did bust off all the mounting bolts on the flare mount and put the same hardware. I just bent the tab where the plastic flare tabs go into the flare mount really tight, no problems so far..I've also heard of guys riveting the flares to the mounts where those plastic tabs are too if that makes any sense...proper bump stops and/or lifting it an inch or so will probably help keep the tire out of the flare too.

 

Add some 3M double sided tape to the flange side.

Doesn't sound like you have a flare problem. Sounds like you have a tire clearance issue. If the tires and the flres are occupying the same spot, I'd rather have the flare fall off than the tires. Sugest you either move the flares out of the tires way or fix it so the tires can't reach the flare.

 

I think you misunderstood my tire rubbing. I meant that as the fender was rubbing on my tire while dangling by that one little screw.

 

I don't know how much you want to go into, but I cut my fenders, fender flares, took off the mounting brackets (the ones rusted to hell), drilled out the center where the thread used to be (the break too easily anyway), and used short bolts with nuts. I'll try to put up pics this weekend.

Also, it helps to take the bracket off and then mount the flare, then bolt the whole thing back on again. There's a couple tabs that are almost impossible to secure without taking the brackets off, at least in my case

 

Same exact problem..

You can not fully remount it without taking off the bracket, attaching it, then remounting.

So I just got it braced and as far on as I could and used some automotive epoxy glue and glued it to my panel. Works great!

I do however love the guy who drilled it with bolts, if this glue fails then that is what I'm going to do next.

I riveted the front flares to the mount brackets and moved them up. Rear ones didn't have enough overlap to rivet to so I tossed them, cut the fender up and off just below tail light. I never have to worry about them again.
