I am sorry for not getting back to you sooner, have been busy and have not been on this site in awhile, "been going over my xj after getting it back from my daughter".
But I would go with the after market throttle body fuel injection set up that holly sells, it is easy to set up wiring wise and is a real good system as opposed to running a carb.
But if you are in California and it is a smog year car it will not pass smog because it is not a CARB approved system, because it has a box you put under the dash that you can adjust lean and rich mixture, but I am told if you put a o2 sensor in the system it wll be smog legal.
Hope that helps, and by the way that system is not cheap, I believe it runs around 1500 to 2000, Jegs was the cheapest I fond when wanting to do that. But it is worth all the hassel of trying to wire in a stock fuel injection system wiring and fuel lines, high pressure fuel lines.

I am very satisfied with this set up. Just some things to take care of. Even the ZJs that have the V8s have this same problem and they have more radiator than an XJ. It is just too narrow for the 90* V configuration. So hood venting is necessary to give the air some place to go. I have done a couple of other tricks to it also to increase air flow and reduce under hood temps. It goes fast, much faster than the 4.0 off the line and is capable of another 50% hp without making the smog police mad at me. I will probably wait until next fall for that though. Many of the things I am doing now is in preparation for that. Then I will have that 5.7 everyone wants with less weight and more room under the hood for my OBA etc.

Didn't have the headers at the time. just stock cast iron. Didn't vent the fenders because of the structural integrity they need to maintain for the coil and shock. Took the hood off and the problems went away of course. So now I have large vents in the hood near the radiator.

Yes, I tried to run it and it got hot. So I went with the Griffin and still got hot. It turned out to be an air flow problem. I think I have that cured now. Plan on some major venting of your hood. When you have a "v' motor in an XJ, they just don't flow any air through the engine compartment. Mine was getting hot enough in there to start melting things. I still have that radiator I had set up for the 4.3

I used a canister because the smog police in CA make you for that year engine I used, which is an OBDI engine. Once you get to OBDII in 96 you don't have to use one, but you do have to use a pressurized tank, preferably from the same vehicle the engine came from.

    I have a Griffin radiator.

Then I made a shroud and used some Derale 2200 CFM fans.

I used a 93 with the 4L60E auto tranny. 94 was the last year the vortec did not have a crank position sensor. 93&4 had the highest horsepower rating of that series.

Go to the "Fun Stuff" album on my page and see the red comanche. That's the one. It rusted out where the front shackles on the rear springs connect to the frame. It was a Wisconsin truck its whole life though and they salt the crap out of the roads here. He put a D30 and D35 back, took the lift off, a 20oz gatorade bottle was his gas tank, there was nothing left of the truck but it drove to meet the requirements for cash for clunkers.
Your welding setup sounds pretty sweet.

well it took 2 men to lift the old bad off and 4 to install this one if that helps but i dont know. the weight of the tool box dos not bug me, my tools, air tools, air tanks, "20 gal" crose bares, ... that what mackes my worry. i took the old bed and made a welder fab trailer out of it to poll behind my truck. the welder is gas powered, quiet, and powers my house when the power gos out. Ill git picks up soon.
Your friends comanche frame is shot??? how ??? i dont what the same fate

Awesome idea! I still want to build a comanche. Great looking truck you have there. Does that bed weigh a lot? I suppose it depends how many tools you carry. A friend of mine just striped his because his frame was shot but since I saw his I had the urge to build one.
