    Better-stocked parts houses and most MRO supply houses will have dye-check kits for crack checking in the field - the best ones I've used are Magnaflux branded. It's not as good as a full-on magnetic particle inspection, but it's great for spot-checking parts and for checking something too damned big to haul about. I keep a couple in my toolbox - they may run $40 a copy, but they've probably saved me a few thousand by now (either in deciding that I didn't need to run a Magnaflux, or in deciding that a part was hooped and getting another instead of wasting money on reconning a blown casting.)

    Something else to think about...

    Well - I don't know what it was I did for you, but I'm happy to have helped!

    Once you get the head bolted back on, don't forget to mark the heads of the cylinder head screws with a bright colour of paint (I typically use a touch-up paint in a bright red or yellow.) This indicates that they have now been torqued twice, and tells the next guy that they will need to be replaced. This procedure is per FSM!
