Jeep Grand Cherokee 1993-2004: Mud Tire Reviews

Mud tires have more of an aggressive tread to ensure your Jeep Cherokee doesn't get stuck. Read on to learn about the different brands and what is right for you.

This article applies to the Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ and WJ (1993-2004).

New tires can not only give your truck a more aggressive look, but they can also make or break your day when you aren't on pavement. When choosing tires, it's really important to decide what you actually use your Jeep for. If you do 99% street, there's no reason to get a tire made for extreme off-road use because that's going to handle poorly on pavement. Likewise, if you mainly do trail riding, you don't want a tire intended for street or even sand use. Here are the popular brands of mud tires to help you choose what's right for you.

BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM2

Price – $180

Size – 31x10.50r15

Estimated Tread Life – 45-50k Miles

Best Suited For – Street, Mud, and Rock

Warranty – Limited

The BFG KM2s have a tread pattern that is very similar to the BFG Krawler TAs, but they are more road friendly, which allows them to be at home in slippery rock when aired down. In mud, the large tread voids allow them to clean out easily and grip well. The biggest downside to these tires is that they use a softer sidewall. This allows them to air down and grip well; however, it also leaves them prone to sidewall cuts and punctures. While they do have good road manners, they get extremely loud as the tread begins to wear down. Recommended if you want decent mud tires for moderate off-roading.

Super Swamper TrXus MT

Price – $201

Size – 31x10.50r15

Estimated Tread Life – 20-30k Miles

Best Suited For – Off-road use only (Mud and Rock)

Warranty – Defect Only

Super Swampers are good for one thing, and that's off-road performance. For that reason, you don't want to use these on pavement. The soft rubber compound used in them that gives you amazing grip on rocks wears out easily on the street. Not to mention they're nearly impossible to get balanced properly. Off the road however, they will outperform your expectations if you've never run a Swamper before. The tread design allows it to clean out mud easily, and the large side lugs allow it to grip both sides of ruts and rocks to keep you from getting stuck. This specific tire offers the best balance between rock and mud performance. Super Swamper also has the Bogger tire, which is a dedicated mud tire, and they offer the Irok as well, which is a dedicated rock tire if your trail Jeep only sees one or the other. Recommended if you want tires for off-road use only.

Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ Radial

Price – $177

Size – 31x10.50r15

Estimated Tread Life – 35-40k mMles

Best Suited For – Street, Sand, and Trail

Warranty – Limited

The Mickey Thompson's are good all purpose trail and beach tires. Out of all of the tires on this list, these have the best road manners when it comes to a quieter and smoother ride. These won't perform as well as a Swamper in the mud or on the rocks, but for milder trails, they'll hold their own very well. Rock to mud comparison, these tires will be more at home on the rocks. The tighter tread pattern means that in sloppy mud they'll be able to get caked easier. They're also relatively light compared to other mud terrains, which helps both your gas mileage and off-road performance by not making your truck work harder to turn them. Recommended if you want good mud tires, while maintaining good road manners.

Pro Comp Xtreme MT2

Price – $190

Size – 31x10.50r15

Estimated Tread Life – 40-50k Miles

Best Suited For – Street and Mud

Warranty – 40,000 Miles

These are the most aggressive tires Pro Comp has in their lineup and unfortunately, they still leave a good bit to be desired. If your Jeep is primarily a mall crawler, this could be the tire for you because of its aggressive look. But off the road, there are a lot better options out there for the price. They perform similar to the Baja MT2s, but they are heavier and more expensive. In the mud, the wide tread voids allow them to clean out easier, but the additional weight means you're also working your motor harder for them to clean. Recommended if you're looking for aggressive looking mud tires.
