This article applies to the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee (1984-2004).

A professional wash and wax could get very costly. Some places charge up to $150 for a full wash and wax. Even though this would make a tremendous difference in the looks of your Jeep Cherokee, sometimes you can't justify paying that much for a car wash. The good news is that the process can be done at home with just a little patience. The washing is important to get the surface clear of any dirt, and the wax is extremely important to protect your paint. It's a transparent layer that sits on top of your paint, protecting it from dirt and small scratches. Read on to learn how you can wash and wax your Jeep at home, while achieving the same results a professional car wash place would.

Materials Needed

  • Hose and spray nozzle
  • Car wash liquid
  • Wash mitt or sponge
  • Bucket
  • Towel
  • Wax and applicator sponge
  • Microfiber cloth or polishing cloth

Step 1 – Hose car off

Use a water hose and a spray nozzle to rinse the car off completely before washing. Be sure and get all the exterior nooks and crannies, including the wheels. Start at the top and work your way down to get all the loose dirt and crud off. Put the recommended amount of car wash liquid in your wash bucket and then fill the bucket with water.

Step 2 – Wash car

Using a wash mitt and the bucket of soapy water, work your way around the entire exterior of the vehicle, starting at the top. Make sure you get all the cracks and crevices, and dip your mitt in the bucket of soapy water frequently to rinse it off and get more fresh soap. Use the hose to rinse the car off completely until all the soap is gone. Dry the car with a clean towel.

Step 3 – Apply wax

While spray-on waxes are easier to apply, good polish waxes last longer. Whichever you choose, apply the wax and allow it to dry before wiping off the excess. If using polish, apply in a circular motion with an applicator sponge, working your way from one end of the car to the other. It's best to do this out of direct sunlight so that the wax doesn't harden too quickly. Once dry, wipe the excess wax off using a microfiber or polishing cloth until all residue is gone and the surface is shiny.
