Zj trans /transfer case issue
So I’m going to look at a 93 zj 5.2 this weekend owner said the tranny is shot. Now I’m not entirely sure he knows what he’s talking about but it seems clean and it’s cheap. If the trans is toast has any one here done a rebuild and can recommend parts I’ve done a lot of googling and all I find is stuff for the dodge version of the 46rh and no info on if it’s the same as the jeep one. I also think that maybe the transfer case is shot not the tranny I know the viscous couplers go out and cause hopping and such around turns do they ever cause a no power flow though them ? Any input is appreciated. |

the 46 re is a dodge transmission manufactured for use in ram/dakota/durango/ramvan/gen2 xj/zj/wj/tj/yj/and i believe jk its a medium heavy duty transmission before you buy a new trans try pulling the tv cable all the way out re inserting the clip pressing the throttle to the floor and then starting it to see if it drives if it doesnt you may have a torque converter issue and or some solenoid issues replacements for the solenoids are 200$ a piece and 400$ for the dealer work of putting them in and doing a flush so for 1000$ you can have a chance of it working or. have a transmission you cant kill and will handle any tire size and lift your throwing at it.....http://www.monstertransmission.com/A...RoCTMMQAvD_BwE

the 46re is the tranny used behind the 5.9 isn’t it ? From what I found researching it’s the 46rh that is the 5.2 tranny. Or the a518 the 46re is the a618 and they have a version used behind the Cummins. |
Sorry, but you are misinformed. The 42re is used behind the 4.0 in ZJs. That and the AW4 are the only automatic transmissions that will bolt up to the 4.0. I'm not as clear on those used for the 5.2 or 5.9.
If the jeep won't move, it's not the transfer case unless it's in neutral or the input shaft is broken. It would be making a lot of noise if that was the case. Remember an RE transmission is electronically shifted so it must be matched to the proper TCM controller. |

Thanks guys. I may still go look at this one as a reman with 100k warranty is 1700$ so that doesn’t rule this one out completely thank you for the info it helps a lot I know a ton about 4.0 and the manuals almost noting about the v8s and any dodge/Jeep auto |

So according to that list, you've got the A518 (46rh, 46re) with the 5.2. The 4.0s use the A500.
My 2000 WJ 4.0 has the A500SE (42re) as far as I know. There are even differences between various models of each. When I had to have my governor pressure sensor and solenoid replaced, the supplier had sent the wrong parts so we had to wait 3 hours on the lift to get the right parts! The supplier even asked for my VIN over the phone! My build sheet says 42re. SO, I guess I'm out of this discussion. Freaking Chrysler is always changing things. What I didn't know is early ZJs used the AW4 until 93. |
