Tcase 98 zj
So I have. 98 limited 5.9 with a np249 and after lifting it I have driveline vibration I'm looking at a couple np242 or np231 do they have to come out of a jeep I've found a couple in half ton dodge pick ups and a couple durangos would either of those work
|
The Dodge ones are slightly different, they have a different spline count, and a vacuum actuator instead of a switch for the 4x4 lights.

I got a np242 out of a 95 grand Cherokee today. Going to pull my np249 in the morning and guessing I'll have to break them down and swap input shafts from what all I've read

You wont need to swap input gear, since the donor came from a ZJ. It's 23 spline, .840" input length. To do the 242 swap correctly.. use the shifter gate, linkage and bezel.

Well everything was going smooth till I went to put np242 would go omen easy then stop about 1/2" from the transmission housing tuns out my old tcase had splines all the way on input shaft the new one has about 1/2" at the very back where the splines stop so I'll be breaking them both down tomorrow ands swapping input ahafts

Here's the info from JeepForum from the very large transfer swap thread.. 93-95 V8 ZJ's: 46RH transmission, 1.55" 23 spline input shaft 93-95 I6 ZJ's with the 42RE: .840" 23 spline input (with collar) 93 I6 ZJ's with the AW4 or AX15: .750" 23 spline input All 96-98 ZJ's: .840" 23 spline input All 96-01 XJ's: .840" 23 spline input 92-95 XJ's: .750" 23 spline input 91 and older XJ's: .750" 21 spline input Check this thread.. https://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/...-np242-685644/ See if theres something i'm missing. I now see the {with collar} on early ZJ 242's. Keep in mind, you need to match gear cut's when swapping an input into a different case. Good luck.. |

Figure out what is going on. Look at the tag on the tcase and check the date code. |
The tag says it's a np242 j made in 93
