Durango steering box.

I searched the forum for which box out of which Durango would work. I found it had to be the v8 box. But the thread said it was hit or miss. I just want to know which one from what year will work and is it really a direct replacement. Thanks in advance guys. I think I'll just buy a new one if not I'll buy a new zj one.

99 Dodge Durango V8 box. Google the swap and there are several good write-ups on this. There's even one here on this forum in XJ tech write-ups. Dukie did a great one on jeepforum.com with lots of pics.

Thanks! I was told on a face book page that a 2000 s10 4x4 box would work also and it's even better than the Durango ones?!

How is the Durango box better?

VitaminLee_ 08-06-2016 03:00 PM

I think it's stronger. But the guy told me s10 boxes has bearings vs bushings like the Durango. I don't know how much truth that is. I think in just going to get the Durango box. I know it will work.

Check out this link. Should help you out with the swap info. After my trip yesterday this is next on my list as I destroyed my stock box trying to get out of some sticky nasty mud

I'm going to be installing a s10 gear box this weekend. I'll take plenty of pictures and report back.

Okay, so you're going with Facebook advise instead of ours? Okay.

I got the idea from face book. I searched the inter web and found a thread where someone explains why the s10 box is a good upgrade. A 96+ s10-s15-Astro- box is a good upgrade over the factory zj box. So I'm going to take my time with the swap. Take plenty of pictures and do a write up. Share it on Cherokee forum because maybe some guys are on a budget or a bind can't find a Durango in the pick a parts and these Chevys are everywhere in the yards. I have the money and time. If it isn't a good upgrade then I can also educate. No hard feelings.

No, hey, go for it! Most guys want their jeeps back on the road ASAP, that's all. I know the Durango bolt pattern is right, but IDK about the GM. I beat the living snot out of my 89 Chevy K10 and it never gave me trouble until I smashed it on a rock! I think those were Saginaw also.

I don't know if it's any different being a smaller box. The box itself isn't as big as the Durango. But it uses bearings vs a copper bushing. We will see. I may be setting myself up for disaster. Haha. But I have had a bunch of s10s with high miles and I've never had a problem with the steering box.

The two boxes are identical outside. Supposedly the s10 is stronger. Only time will tell. Bolted right in. No issues what so ever. This is a 2002 s10 zr2 4x4 box. Super smooth.
