Of course the part number is different, there are four different transmissions listed , two for each and none match. got the 48RE and 46 RE for the 05 2500 dodge and the 42RE and 44RE for the 96 jeep grand cherokee. No real mention of splines or shaft diameter.

I am reading in another forum to use the 5.2 torque converter and that it is the flex plate that is balanced. It also says that the 5.9 torque converter is made for a 46 RE, but again the years selected could be the cause.

I believe the transmission used in the V8 ZJs is the 44re. The 42re is used with the 4.0, THAT I know as fact. I think you should get the converter for the jeep 5.9 and see if it bolts to the Dodge 5.9's flexplate. If not, you'll need the jeep flexplate for a 5.9. Converters are balanced themselves. Some engine balancing is done with the flywheel or flexplate and the front harmonic balancer.

This is getting confusing. Which swap are we talking about? A Dodge truck 5.9 into a jeep, right? Or are we talking about replacing a jeep 5.2 with a Dodge 5.9? Or what? I thought this started with a 4.0!

The thing with the 2wd driveshaft is the tailshaft on the 2wd transmission is as long as the trans and t/case on a 4wd. It may very well fit, provided the t/case has a slip joint output. If you're going to change the tailshaft case, the actual trans output shaft has to be changed as well, you know. That requires disassembling the O/D section of the trans.

i am talking about a 95 dodge 2500 5.9 engine going into a 96 jeep grand cherokee that has a blown up 5.2 in it. I started another thread but no one responded.

Right.....Okay! I think all you'll need is the 5.9 jeep flexplate unless your existing converter bolts to the Dodge one. I believe the 5.2 and the 5.9 flexplates are balanced differently. I doubt the block engine mounting bolt pattern is different but the mounts themselves might be. I'm not familiar with the newer V8s enough to know if the 5.2 intake will mount on the 5.9 or not. That would be sweet if it did! Same with the exhausts. I remember the old B-block 361 and 383 did just that but the raised block 413/426 didn't use the same intake.

You may have some accessory mounting problems with the alternator and P/S pump and stuff, but that's minor. You might even be able to reprogram the PCM for the 5.9, IDK.

This sounds like fun! Wish I was closer so I could get involved.

On Jeepforum.com there is a thread about it, They sorta lost me, got me confused about what was going on. But i have quite a few people telling me the 360 is externally balanced and the 5.2 is internal. So they are saying that the balancing is in the torque converter on these. Then someone else says the torque converter will not work with the tranny in the jeep. Some are saying the flex plate is weighted also. So i have my mechanic calling his tranny shop, and my engine seller calling his tranny shop. Then i guess i have to find out if i have a 44RE or a 46RE, had different answers on that also.

I think the intakes will both bolt on but would i not want the 360 to have it's own intake? should be better flowing. I think both are keggers, i have heard this intake is not well liked anyway.

Well, I guess I'm going to have to bow out of this one, this a going beyond my knowledge. Someone mentioned the Ram manifold was too high for the jeep's hood. IDK myself. The last Mopar V8 I worked on was my friends 340 Duster.

IMHO i would find a nicer V8 zj and just swap everything on the 4.0 onto the v8. although i understand this is not always as easy. i wanted to 5.9 swap my zj but i dont see it worth the time or effort, to each their own.

yeah probably right, when the factory makes them already you would save money and time getting the factory made, even if it is a little pricy. Look for a 98.

Now if it were a Comanche I could understand a V8 swap
