Default Getting a “new” daily

hi all, just starting to get into cherokees and i love the xj body style and the 4.0 engine. Im trying to get a different daily from the truck i have right now amd im looking at a 130,000 mile 1998 2d manual xj. I looked at it test drove it and its got zero rust everything inside works and the engine runs like normal and shifts normal the only thing id have against it is the smokers smell in it but that can be cleaned. Its 2200 and I garuntee i can get him lower on it because i saw the valve cover gasket was leaking and theres no spare tire but im having a hard time pulling the trigger because i need a daily vehicle that’ll get me to school everyday for the rest of the year trouble free as long as i keep up maintenance and treat it well. Do you guys thing I should jump on it??

By your description I am thinking the asking price for that in my area might be as much as $3500. From what I have seen on Craigslist. Now what they actually are getting when the dust settles is unknown. I know I am not paying that much for one though. While a 2 door might work for me a stick won't. I am older and to be frank to lazy to shift. LOL.
But at $2200 for a 2dr stick with 130K. As you described it. Assuming it is what you want. I think that is reasonable.
Spare to get by is nothing. Quick look on Craigslist or a trip to the boneyard should be all it takes to find something to use just in case.
The smoker smell as you put it might be a little more involved but you seem to be OK with dealing with it.
I say get him to come down more like you think you can and go for it. Even at $2200 I think you would still have done OK.

More valuable is a relative term. Depends on the person. It boils down to what are you willing to pay. I know somebody that picked up a pretty solid 2 door. Can't remember exactly year but it was a '97 and up one. Payed $300 for it. Had a couple issues but turns the PO was an idiot and he straightened it out pretty easy. He is ripping it apart to make an awesome crawler though. Which actually is kind of a shame seeing how solid it was. It is not that I would not drive a 2 door but thinking I prefer a 4 door. Which is what I own. A '00 Sport. There is less of them I believe. So......
But rare does not always translate into dollars. I know none of this really helps. LOL.

If I was you, I would buy that thing in a heartbeat. No rust, manual, 130k miles for only 2200 and maybe less? That's a steal in my book.

Around here, being in the rust belt, semi clean XJ's of any config. are over $3k. I payed 2500 for my 97 4x4, 4dr auto with 223k because that is basically the bottom price for a running XJ around here.

The only downside of dailying an XJ is the gas mileage, which in your case will be better since you have a manual as long as you drive smart. I've been dailying my XJ for 3 years and I love it.
