Default Would this work?

I this probably is a stupid question and I understand that but I'm looking for out the box thinkers here. I know intended use isn't for this application but want to know if there is a possibility of it working?

I just got my new to me 99XJ and it only came with two regular keys. Well on my build sheet it says I have keyless entry so I popped by the dealership and they confirmed it. But I have to buy a new key fob for $95 and then have them program (another $60). So it's gonna cost me $155 to get back to factory keyless. My question is has anyone or is it possible to use a newer style fob like the one below with the fob and key all in one? What would prohibit it?

Different rf signals, different key design, etc.
Do yourself a favor and just get an aftermarket alarm with remote start. Best thing I have ever done.

Gonna have to stick with the stock style key fob or install a replacement system like mentioned above.

When I had took mine in to a dealer to have it programmed, the guy said "sorry it didn't work" really loud after spending just a few seconds programming it. I wasn't sure what happened, but apparently he thought $60 was unreasonable as well.

You should be able to find a new key fob from a non-dealer parts seller for around $30.

Instructions to program another key fob are available. They are probably available at other places, but this is the first address that came up for me with the info.

You were able to program remotes up to 1996, as they used the old IR system, but with the newer RF systems, you have to have a dealer or locksmith program the remote with a computer. As far as I know, there's no workaround for this, not even using the factory OBD port or a key sequence (you can, however, program new Sentry-Key keys with a key sequence). If there was, I'd want to know about it, as I need a second remote for my 2002 WJ Grand Cherokee.

The remote you show is for 2005-2007 Grand Cherokee WK's, so you'll actually need a remote that looks just like this one (black or gray in color) to work with your XJ:
