Replacing speakers help?
 

Afternoon,
This would be my first time doing anything with audio in a vehicle. I have replaced the head unit which works awesome, but with that found out how crappy the front speakers door and tweeters are after 15 yrs. The rear speakers were replaced by the previous owner with Fosgates, and just had the fader turned all the way to the back. I am looking for decent speakers to fit an 01 WJ with the Infinity Gold sound. I am clueless, so I am asking for some help with what type of speakers. I know there 6x9s and the tweeters are 2.5s but do I need 3 way or not etc. Would love some help. Thanks

What I do for audio stuff is go to www.crutchfield.com and research through them. Then I find what I like and go on amazon or ebay or best buy to find them much much cheaper.

Does it matter if its a 5way or 3 way speaker, I guess is more my question. Dont know enough about audio setups to help my self out of a wet paper bad sadly. Build power plants, and restore antiques..

Im no audio guru but it really doesn't matter. 5-ways are probably more expensive and imo unnecessary. Throw a quality set of 3-ways in and call it a day. I've always had good luck with Kicker stuff and you can get them pretty cheap on amazon.

I will point out that not just ANY 6x9" will fit into the factory opening with the door panel installed without impeding on the speaker grille... you'll need to bypass the factory amp under the rear seat as well in order to make the aftermarket speakers to produce anything else but bass, as the factory "speakers" in the front doors are actually woofers with the Infinity system, or you'll have to choose component sets that include separate woofers and tweeters (replace the stock tweeters in the dash with the tweeters, and install the woofers in where the stock woofers are, and connect the crossovers between the two).

I have an '02 WJ without the Infinity system, and I'm running a set of Alpine SPE-6090's that I paid $90 at Best Buy for, and I'm still running the stock non-Infinity tweeters and rear door speakers with them on an aftermarket Kenwood head unit, using the Kenwood's built-in 50wx4ch amp. They sound GREAT, and for what I paid, I can't complain... the SPR and SPS Series speakers from Alpine should also fit, and they produce a bit more bass than the SPE-6090's do.

If you don't want to go the aftermarket 6x9" route for the front doors, any 5x 1/4", 6x 1/2", or 6x 3/4" aftermarket speaker will fit into the factory 6x9" opening with a plastic adapter plate. I'd also recommend Dynamatting all four doors for better sound deadening.

The factory dash tweeters are 2.75", and you'll have to fabricate an aftermarket brackets and cut off the tweeter harnesses to connect the bare tweeter speaker wires to the aftermarket tweeters, splicing the factory wiring to the wiring included with the aftermarket tweeters. Memphis Audio DOES make a "drop-in" replacement that requires no modification or brackets, but you'll still need to splice the factory tweeter speaker wiring to the new tweeters. I haven't tested them, but I've heard good things about them, so it's worth a shot. :)

For the door woofers, they make "plug-'n'-play" harnesses that have the butt connectors on one end to connect to the aftermarket speaker terminals, and a big plug on the other end to connect right into the factory connector... you don't need to splice any speaker wiring for those.

Ok, that I didn't know about the woofer only in the front doors. I was looking at the 6090 Alpines yesterday and wasn't sure about them. I also found the Memphis Audio ones and didn't know they made plug and play stuff. Like I said, this is my first attempt at audio dabbling. Do you mean to splice around the factory amp to feed non factory speakers for the doors if I wanted to use the Alpines? THanks for the help thus far.

The Alpines are a good value for the money. IDK if the Memphis ones are plug-'n'-play or not, you'd have to ask Crutchfield. About the amp, you'd need to cut the wires from the amp and find where it connects at the HU (head unit) and then splice those wires directly to new speaker wiring and to your new speakers... you only have to do it for the front 4 speakers. :)

Thats what I figured. I will most likely have to do that once they get here. I have 2 of the SPE 6090's on the way and a set of matched replacement tweeters. Im stoked, and now my kids won't complain about how it's loud for them and ok-ish level for me.
