I have a 1998 4.0 L6 Jeep Cherokee, I have 6 KC Day lighter 100 Watt Halogen lights. I understand that the stock 90 watt alternator cannot support this setup ( By a long shot ) , I have not put the lights on yet because I want to iron out everything first. I am hoping that someone can guide me through the upgrade process and all the components that need to be upgraded other than the alternator. Preferably a process that wont hurt my wallet too much but I understand that this process can get quite pricey. I also have a CB and some other miscellaneous gadgets that I connect via 12V ports around the car. Any information helps, thank you.

Following along to see what everyone else says. I just ordered upgraded battery/power cables from XJwonders on here as the stock ones are too small of a gauge to handle a lot more power.

I would do either the ZJ or Durango 136 amp or 160 amp alternator. The 160 amp is harder to find but still fairly common.

Both require a grinder to clearance the alternator bracket, and a small casting "bump" on the block. Takes about 5 minutes with the cheapest harbor freight grinder.
Then you will definately want to upgrade your battery cables.

Thanks for the reply, I think perhaps 136 amp is not enough, also I think 160 might be cutting it close. At 600 watts for all the lights that puts it at 50 amps and then the car takes what I assume would be 90 percent or a little less of the stock alternator so maybe 80 or 70 amps. I just do not know, I can get the durango alternator off of rock auto but I wanted to be sure if it can handle these heavy load lights. Do you have a similar setup? What kind of results have you had?

It doesn't take 70 amps to run the vehicle, I would say its around half of that.

Ok, good to know. Would you say it is safe then to run with a 130 amp alternator?

Yes 136a alternator would be fine

I am not exactly the best at this, would it be possible for a wiring diagram for a 136 amp alternator? Or something along those lines so I can see what exactly needs to be upgraded.
