So I'm going to buy a new stereo and speakers. I just searched some threads and I see that the stock front door speakers are 5.25 but alot of people said that 6.5 speakers fit better? What's the truth or are both these statements true haha

Both are true. But some have had problems with depth of mounting the 6.5's not width.

I think the issue with 6.5's in the door is the depth. If you get a really deep pair they won't fit. I got these for the rear, and they should also fit in the door.

Yeah 6.5's will fit in the front and rear, you just have to watch the depth, as others are saying. If you want to be sure it'll fit, buy from Crutchfield (who also supplies complimentary wiring harnesses, speaker adapters, and instructions), or get 5.25's. You'll have to re-drill the screw holes in both cases.

This brings me to my question. What speakers sound as good or a little better than stock. My wife's 01 is in need. I threw in a pair of Sony that I've had for like 9 years or so and have been reused in 3 vehicles so far. They sound worse than stock. No bass at all and they sound like they're in coffee cans. Maybe they're shot. Fronts are stock and not functioning. Would like to get some replacements that will at least have a little bass and not distort too easy. Running stock head unit only AM/FM and cassette. Lol. Might throw in a factory CD player I have.

On a side note also wondering if anyone knows of some newer vehicles that have useable speakers. Could probably pull some from a junk yard for cheap.

I went 6.5" and only did Components in the front with an AMP and subwoofer. I decided to go with ALPINE SPR-60C They really bump. The only thing that sucked is I really had to make the hole bigger for them to fit. With the adapters they come with, it was too close to the edge of the door panel and they wouldn't really shut right so what I actually did was just CUT a HOLE in the Door Panel and use Sheetmetal screws to screw the whole damn speaker to through the door panel etc LOL.
