our classes up here are different:
general is 10+ 300w max
general w/honours is full use 300w max
advanced is full use, can't remember the power limits

i got started as a pirate... ar3500/257hp...that kind of thing, but wanted to go legal so grabbed my G+H a couple of years back. I'm def. an HF guy, no piggy-backing I run a Yaesu FT-857D wired to an AT-120 on the front bumper...that carries me from 40 up thru 70cm. I have a Hustler 80S i haven't had a chance to play with yet (my MFJ-259C has gone funky..). When I bought the radio it was already opened up so can i tx if i need to in an emergency, but basically i just monitor the 11m channel the guides are using. Not many up here using non-cb's for off-roading

The faceplate is mounted just above my rearview mirror, main box under the driver's seat. I'll see if i can get a pic or two

Hello glad to meet you looked through my logs to see f I had worked in the past but looks like I have not, we will have to do that soon shouldn't be hard to do.


Every country has different rules and regulations as far as power and band width goes with each level of license.


In my 04 WJ I use an offset receiver mounted Screwdriver for 10-160m and a Kenwood 200w 6-160m HF radio with an IC-2820 UHF/VHF/D-Star radio in it.

As mentioned, bad crystals are the most likely culprit, but rots a ruck finding replacements.

Really, unless you are a hobbyist and have the knowledge and desire to get in there and repair it at the component level, you are better off selling it on fleabay and getting a new one.


You'll not only get channels 17-23, but you'll get the "new" channels too, 24-40.

I don't even remember when they added those channels.

Did I mention that that thing is ancient?

hey Fred I remember us discussing your WJ in another thread a few months back...life's been busy and i haven't had much time to hit up the forums. Winter's fast approaching, i'll see if i can get a quick tune done on my 10m beam...last time i was on the qth rig the 2012 was acting up...can't win for losin' these days lol

Nice! I have owned several Ft-897's in the past and a FT-817 QRP rig that I used at home for a while before I bought my Elecraft KX3 I now use at home and mobile.

John thank you for signing onto this thread you have been a ARO for much longer than I have and welcome your input.


I got in late in life at age 57 but it is a hobby that can be enjoyed your entire life and always finding something new to do, as you well know. I enjoy giving back to the hobby in the small ways that I can teaching classes and leading a testing group.


My main interest in the hobby is DXing all modes.

I was licensed as a CBer back in the 60s as XM52-3963, don't ask me why I can remember my license number since I can't remember what I had for dinner and those licenses haven't been needed for years.
It took me awhile due to family, mortages and work all of which kept getting in the way of my getting my Amateur license.
I finally got my Basic in 2002 and have since upgraded to the Advanced.
Only thing missing is my CW certfication although it is no longer required to operate on all frequencies here in Canada.
At home I am working on setting up my TS2000 as well as several other transceivers.
I haven't put a radio in the Jeep yet, partly because I haven't decided where or which radio I want to put in.
I have a Kenwood TM-700 with APRS setup, a Yaesu FTM-10R which should be setup on my Burgman and an older Radio Shack 242 that would be good as well.
I am also torn as to which one would fit into my Sonata as well so I tend to drive around with the heads trying to decide which would be best in which car and where to mount them.
My main interests are in SDR, digital modes and building just about any project that looks interesting.
My present project list has 22 construction projects on it.
None of the projects are Cherokee related, that is a totally seperate list!
In any case I am glad to see this thread and I am sure that it will be like the rest of this forum ... very informative.

Welcome to you glad to see you on this thread. You were asking about mounts for radios I use radios with remote heads on them so they can be separated. I use this mount on the XJ and my WJ both. It is a flexible stiff gooseneck mount that slides under the front seat bolt using a flat U styled mount. Just an idea you might want to look at my radios are mounted on a swing out tray also mounted under the seat in the XJ. I sits close to the console not like this photo. I've only had my license for about a year and basically just listen on 70cm with my baofeng handheld. I'm thinking about getting a Yaesu FTM-100DR because we have a digital repeater locally. Can you post some more info on where you mounted everything, and that motorized mount? I assume it's a Diamond K9000?

That is a nice radio you plan on I have the quad band Yaesu in the XJ 10/6/2/440 that the above photo shows and the WJ had an I-2820 in it as I still run a lot of D-Star with it the HF rig is an TS-480HX a 200 w radio with a screwdriver antenna mounted on the read receiver hitch offset.


Both of my radio main units in the WJ as well as the screwdriver auto-tuner are all mounted in the rear cargo area next to the back seat. Only the control heads are mounted up front one of them on a gooseneck mount (I-2820) the other at the front of the console (HF rig)


You are correct on the antenna mount that is the one and has held up very well even when you forget to lower it in a low clearance area. I have it mounted to the center side to the roof rack with the antenna coax coming out the cargo hatch top and along the roof rack to antenna same for power.


I did run an 8 ga. wire to the rear from the battery because of the power required for the 200w radio and length of run.


I keep several of the baofeng's around just for tower work here at home if one gets dropped it not a big deal to replace.

As long as it's a Fusion repeater and not Dstar, the Yaesu is fine. My wife decided on that same radio for her Patriot(bleh)...which I still need to install. I've powered it up here in the house to play with/program it. I'm not real crazy about it, mostly because I've been spoiled by the touch screen on my ftm-400dr. The antenna currently in use on my XJ is mounted in the center of the roof(yes I drilled a hole in my roof). The antenna I don't use much anymore is a Larsen glass mount. I don't plan on removing it since I can still use it for an HT and monitor another frequency.

I'm going to mount(her ftm-100) the main body of the radio to the underside of the passenger seat, then use a seat bolt mount from http://www.lidomounts.com/hamradiomounts.html to mount the control head. Not sure yet what's going to get done for an antenna, but temp solution is a mag mount. The Patriot(bleh) she bought has a sun roof, which is sort of in the way of center mounting. This is pretty much the same setup as the ftm-400dr in my XJ, excepting the antenna mount and I bent/welded a mount for the control head.

Hi, I'm looking for a good place to install an EF Johnson 5300 in my 2000 Cherokee, I've considered the side of the center console but I didn't know if anyone had any better ideas.

If you can get it to fit between the seat and console on the pass side it works OK, but up further and people tend to hit their legs on it when off road. But that depends on the size of the pass in the seat also.


Another place is on the roof above the windshield.


That radio is quite old check it out before installing to see how well it works before installing anywhere. There are a lot of new radios that cost a $100 or under that do a lot more than the old ones did with better preformance.


If you go back in this thread you can see several photos of my Ham and CB radios installed in my 99 XJ.
