7 inch screen radios: Will they work with the dash (99 Chreokee classic)

So Ive been looking to get a new radio for my 99 Cherokee classic (the old infinity system is getting, well, old) and Ive been interested ina few models with the 7 inch fold out screens. The problem is, most of them fold upwards. The only one I can find on youtube in a cherokee of similar model folds downwards. does anybody know if the ones that fold upwards will work with the dashboard of the 99 cherokee? Thanks in advance. Pic for reference

Better off with a full screen double din. The pop up blocks the vents and the mechanical kick out screens are not well suited if you go wheeling at all.

I was told double Din wont fit without cutting into the vents. Also, I dont go off road much, my jeep is my daily driver.

That's inaccurate. You have to trim the dash piece, not the vents. There are several writeups and videos out there that show you what you'd need to do.

I think he meant you have to cut into the ducts below the normal stereo position, which you do to fit a full sized 2 DIN unit.

Exactly. i dont wann destroy my vent ducts for a radio. I live up north and need that heat! as for the actual vents above the radio I dont care if they are covered I just want to make sure the screen can properly display and not be stuck pointed downwards because of the overhand from the vents

^^^ this

or, check out the RB1 radio install option. I have seen a write up on it somewhere that involves getting the radio and a doner computer from a 2004 GC. This unit is a factory 1.5 din with GPS. Options for an aux in and xm radio exist too, plus a hack for composite video in for either a camera or DVD input. good luck JY scroungeing. do a Google search for Chrysler RB1 and that will give you a list of vehicles to check that the unit came in. Or, spend the +$250 on eBay for a unit. Its not easy, but its not super difficult and its the best way to get something in that spot that looks factory. This is my next dash mod after getting the 6 switch bezel that I just installed.

I have 0 interest on spending hundreds of dollars and custom making a 1 1/2 din radio, I simply want to know if these 1 din radios with the flip up screens will work. the vents above the radio have a 1 inch overhang, i dont want the screen to be stuck pointing downwards because of the overhang from the vents

well then captain grumpy pants... every radio that flips up will block your vents. The screen won't point down, it'll face you and the overhang isn't enough to make the screen point abnormally down but your center vents are useless hence forth.

enjoy your new radio.

Which flip up model did you install in your XJ?

Thank you for answering the question. Thats all I wanted to know. I rarley use the central vents so this is perfectly fine.

I don't like it particularly... it works but I like my vents so I constantly have to flip up then down then back up and so-on... I'm formulating a replacement and ill start a thread with that when I figure it out.

ill take a pic of the current setup and post tomorrow to show what's installed currently.

so I'm confused... you want your vents because you live up north... but you're fine with blocking the vents? If you actually read up on the process, you'd see that its small cuts that are then filled back in so as not to disrupt the air flow. Certainly less disruptive than a big 'ol screen in front of the vents... for those cold winters. The only cost is the unit and your time and the cost for the unit is gonna be there if you modify or get a flip up.

ymmv

Sure, right, of course. Those center vents that the screen blocks are the only vents in the vehicle. After those are blocked, he'd have no heat at all. Sure.

ok... lets kill two birds with one stone:

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...81205e6a45.jpg

The pictures shows the flip up radio in the open (blocking the center vents) and closed. I took this picture from where my head is, and as you can see, the left vent is mostly blocked by the turn signal stock and the steering wheel. Its basically a glorified hand warmer/cooler. If I had more ambition, I'd take a video of the radio screen vibrating while in the closed position in normal city and highway traffic.

So this leaves you with two fully blocked vents, one vent that is near worthless and the other vent that is fully functional - on the passenger side. And floor and defrost of course. Personally, when its hot out, I want the AC blowing in my face like I'm a dog hanging his head out the window. if you are ok with having a cool windshield and feet - have at it. Again - YMMV
