I know this is old but I'm wondering this too... So I am better off with a 3'? What type of range can you get with a 3 foot compared to a 4 foot?

Go with the longest you can get away or deal with. Range is hard to say as there are far more factors involved than just the length of the antenna.

A front fender/hood mount is more effective as it has a better ground plane (the hood) as the base is where the GP is established. But usually even a less desirable location the greater the length the better for you as far as signal.
