1993 XJ new stereo help
 

The stereo that the PO put in my jeep went out not too long ago. Out as in the stereo still had power, but no sound was coming from the speakers. I tested the speakers with a 9V battery at the speakers then at the wires where they went into the stereo connector. The speakers worked at both points and made a "popping" sound. Also the way the PO wired the stereo was a mess. The factory harness went into newer Chrysler connectors that went into the stereo connector. (I cut off the extra wires down to the factory wires.)

So I went out yesterday and purchased a new stereo, (Kenwood Excelon KDC X500 to be specific) and installed it. Printed off a wiring color guide from the12V (great website) for the jeep stereo wires and hooked up the wires to the correct wires from the new stereo connector with butt connectors. Then I put the negative battery cable back on, started my jeep, turned on the stereo, pulled the face plate and reset it. Stereo started up again and displayed; "Miswiring, check wiring then power on." Disconnected the negative cable again, and proceeded to check all my wiring, stereo wires looked fine and so did all the speaker wires. made sure speaker wires went to the positive and negative of the stereo and dried again. Same problem. Double checked and tried again, nothing. So at this point I am very frustrated and confused as to why the stereo is not working. I am confident that I put the correct wires together and that it should work, but it doesn't. Really the only option I have at this point is to take my jeep to the audio shop I purchased my stereo from, tell them the problem and have them fix the issue. This is my only option as I am leaving for vacation tomorrow, and I plan to take it to them before I leave and have it fixed when I come back.
That way I'm not stressing about it while I'm on vacation still wondering why it doesn't work.

But if there is something very simple I am overlooking that will fix the issue, please let me know. So I may possibly save some money and have the satisfaction that I was able to fix it myself.

So what is causing the stereo to display this?

Well, stop that. The confidence, I mean. It's preventing you from re-thinking and re-checking your work. Obviously, you did it wrong.

I'd check for a mixup between your constant hot and your switched hot, for starters.


Simple, you wired it wrong.

They have an amazing array of vehicle-specific wiring diagrams. I'd check there before you drop the coin on the audio shop.

OTOH, given your time crunch, the shop may be your best bet.

The audio store called me while I was still traveling on Monday, and it turns out the wiring harness going to the rear hatch speakers was ripped open and was grounded out. Since the stereo has a protection mode it wasn't going to work with the rear speakers being grounded out. Front door speaker wiring was **** and was grounding out too. All the speakers were pretty shot too.

So they're gonna repair the harness to the rear speakers, put new wiring for the front speakers and replace all the speakers with new higher quality speakers. It's gonna cost me a little bit of coin, but at least when I return from vacation I can finally listen to music in my Jeep :thumbsup:
