Depends how deaf. Totally? Partial hearing?

XJwonders 08-29-2014 08:48 PM

Totally.

Huh?

Put a glove on and use the braille method I guess, you knucklehead!!!

XJwonders 08-29-2014 08:53 PM

LOL, we aren't blind, just can't hear. Braille won't do any good.

If I had a dollar for every time I tell a waiter/waitress that I'm deaf and they end up bringing me Braille menu, I ll be a ****ing millionaire.

It would work. Think about it. You could develop feeling in the ends of your fingers like a safe cracker and "feel" the noise.

Seriously, I wonder what would happen if you used a stethoscope. Ever done it?

XJwonders 08-29-2014 08:59 PM

I tried at the doctor's office but I never got as far, cause he got so pissed about me touching his "tools" in the room and told me to keep my hands to myself. LOL

I do feel for certain vibrations but I cannot hear any high pitched stuff, like intake leaks or stuff like that.

cruiser54 08-29-2014 09:01 PM

Mechanic's stethoscope is way more "vibey" than a doctor's.

You know you can take the probe off and listen without it also. Why not try it?

XJwonders 08-29-2014 09:08 PM

And I do feel certain vibrations while driving but I can't narrow it down. I usually ask a hearing person to ride with me and they would listen and tell me exactly what the problem is.

For two years I have had a clunking when I roll out of park while turning. Always thought it was the sway bar links or tie rods.

Fast forward to today and I made new steering set up with DOM tubing and removed all the sway bars. Clunking is still occurring and a friend told me it's the axle joint. Well I ll never figure that out on my own lol.

I'm still curious about using it for vacuum leaks and pulley/bearing noises though.

XJwonders 08-29-2014 09:18 PM

Yes pulley/bearing noises is another thing I can't hear. I usually ask people to listen for me by touching a screwdriver to the part and listen to it. I tried to experiment by using the screwdriver and "feeling" it but doesn't yield any results.

I'm still working on new methods of diagnosis. I always hate relying on others when I could do it myself.

I ll try the stethoscope soon. Maybe I ll try using it in conjunction with a screwdriver.

I wonder if certain alloys of metal used in screwdrivers yielded different noise levels or different vibration characteristics?

cruiser54 08-29-2014 09:20 PM

Stethoscope absolutely trumps the old screwdriver method.

XJwonders 08-29-2014 09:24 PM

I understand that, I meant with a deaf ear, the stethoscope may not work just as efficient. But if it was used in addition to screwdriver method, it might help.

I don't know what I'm talking about lol. I have yet pick a stethoscope.

Mechanic's stethoscope is quite different in the "vibe" department.
