MJ Rear Axle Questions
Does anyone have (or know where I can find) the width of a Comanche rear axle??
I need center of spring to center of spring, as well as backing plate to backing plate measurements. Also wanted to find out what axles were used in the Jeep Comanche and what years they were used if anyone happens to know that. Dana 44, Chrysler axle ??? Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks Dennis |

Anyone have a Comanche with a stock rear end that could crawl under and take a measurement from spring to spring or backing plate tp backing plate for me? |
what are you trying to do with those measurements?
MJs came with 3 rear axles: AMC20 (1986 model year only), Dana 35 (87-92), or Dana 44 (87-92) |

I would like to use a Dana 44 from an XJ because it will bolt right in and is only about 1 inch wider than the stock rear end, but XJ D44's are getting hard to find at the bone yards. So I'm trying to narrow down some other possibilities to look for, but need to know how much wider they are compared to the XJ rear end. Thanks again for the year applications 89eliminator!! Dennis |
The MJ rear axles are the same width as the XJ axles. Likewise the front axle is the same width as an XJ front axle.
Good luck finding a MJ D44. |
yes, MJ and XJ axles are the same width. only differences are mainly shock mounting and spring perch locations.
it will be much easier locating an XJ44 vs MJ44 |
Thank you guys!! That's pretty much what I needed to know.
I guess I'll just have to keep visiting the Pick-Your-Parts yards in the area until one or the other (XJ or MJ) shows up. Thanks again for the info! Dennis |
Are you stuck on the 5x4.5 bolt pattern? There's other axles out there that are easier to find.
I'd get an 8.25 out of a KJ if you are. Cheap, available, disk brakes, same width and bolt pattern. |
