MJ 4.o 5 speed 2wd swap 4x
 

I have an 88 2wd 5 speed long bed with a 4.0 and want to know what is the best vehicle to try and find to make it 4x.

You can use a Cherokee drivetrain to swap it to 4wd, but will need a new rear driveshaft made. It's not too hard, get the trans, tcase, front driveshaft, front axle (just make sure to get the ratio that matches yours, get both axles and put new perches on the rear axle, or regear your rear axle), and the shifter then swap them over. I also have a 2wd MJ and plan to keep it 2wd. You wouldn't happen to want to get rid of any 2wd parts would you?

Will the transfer work out of an automatic work with the 5 speed and what years can I use.

The transfercases between auto and manual are the same, but change in certain years so you will want to get a transfercase from the same year range as the transmission. I believe they went from 21 to 23 spline in 1990. There are a lot of online posts about it. I at some point plan to swap my ba10-5 with an ax-15 so I've read a lot of swap info. I'm not 100% sure how to get the 4wd light on the dash to work, but everything else is mechanical and fairly simple.
