Little Big Truck of the Comanche Tribe

I'll give you guys a brief introduction to the Comanche I bought this summer and the current build that's underway. When I got it, it was dead and had been for 2-3 years.

1990 MJ Short bed, 4.0L 5-speed
Lift is derived from old Bronco parts and was built by a previous owner. Custom longarm crossmember, Bronco radius arms on a Bronco D44 front axle, chromoly shafts and a Detroit locker. Ford 9" rear with chromoly shafts and a spool. Custom driveshafts, unknown SYE kit. 35" tires. I added the snorkel, a set of heated 07' Mini Cooper seats, and some Brat seats in the bed.

As we all know, the Renix system in crap, underpowered, and this Jeep has been plagued with electrical problems since I revived it. I picked up a 2000 XJ with an automatic & 141k that had been flopped on its side in a snow storm. 2 days later my buddy and I had picked it clean. In the next week or two when we get a good stretch of weather my buddy and I will be making the swap. Full interior, wiring, motor/trans and all. We're shooting for 4-5 days to get it all done, but we all know how projects go...

Paint will probably be a white base with a real-tree snow camo over it. This spring/summer will hopefully be a tube bed and exo-cage.

Welcome. The Renix system isn't as crappy as you think. Its actually about 65% GM sourced components making it cheap to source parts for and upgrade.

Should be cool to see

Correct.

Correct.

Cruiser, I went through and did all your Renix tips. Gauges still wouldn't work, still had a high idle, just had a lot of electrical issues and prior butchering from a previous owner. The swap will probably be quicker and cheap in the long run vs. fixing all the little things.

PO butchering is a bear. I understand.

I purchased a few small things off that XJ and a buddy bought the Tcase and the rear drive shaft. Small world.

Looking forward to more pics!

"Prepare for preemptive Vasoline application!" Lol

ZFinger 12-24-2014 05:25 PM

I've already got a good 231 with a SYE kit. Just wish it came with Jeep so I could sell it off. I did have to pull it out and return it to the seller because he'd already taken a deposit on it.

Outlaw Star 12-27-2014 05:28 PM

Hows your Mj coming along?

ZFinger 12-27-2014 06:36 PM

Need a fender, a door and some window switches. Grill and header panel came in, interior trim it getting cleaned and painted. Besides that, just waiting on good weather. My other car is a 240sx with a welded diff and no heat. So timing with the weather is critical if the trucks coming off the road. I'm so anxious to get it going!

Damn, I would have charged more than that just to take it out. And I'm the sucker that did have to take it out!

Couple updates, the swap is coming along pretty good!

MJ is stripped, firewall has been reworked, dash has been fit and the tabs welded on. Heater core has been test fit too. Gas tank has been dropped and modified to accept the XJ pump.

Couple updates:
Dash is in, driveline is in, fuel tanks in. Still on the list, I need to find a fender and a door, finish the body wiring harness, and make a few more connections. It's close https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...bbf1a5794d.jpg

Truck is mostly done. Got a few things to tinker with, align the fender gaps, put the front driveshaft back in, and have the bumpers powder coated. Road test tomorrow.

Truck was a bench seat, manual optioned stick shift, plauged with electrical issues.

Now it's a loaded 97+, automatic, power windows, locks, heated power mirrors, overhead console, and heated Mini Cooper seats. Once I finish selling off all the leftover XJ donor parts and MJ parts, the swap will have pretty much paid for itself.

Next on the list is plating the frame, building rock rails, tube bed, and eventually an exocage.

Wow, it looks great. Should get some Napier flares and see about a gas tank skid if you plan on wheeling it.

Did the later model shifter bolt right in?

What to you mean by "bolt right in"? The shifter plate just screws down to the trans tunnel, and the shifter is cable actuated. The plate fit the tunnel fine. I put some seam sealer under it to make sure it sealed, and zipped a few new screws in to hold it all down. The 4wd shift linkage needed a lot of screwing with though.

Side not, everything was fine with the ignition and column, until I pulled the truck out of the shop yesterday and it wouldn't give my key back! I'll be pulling the column apart today, must be that little lock cable that tells the ignition the trans is in park.

I was referring to the trans shifter.

Now, I need to find out how the later shifter would work with the original console.

In theory it will work, But the bezel may not read correct? I think it has to do mostly with the shape/bend of the late model shifter lever. The handle will work for either. ZJ handle will work with very little/simple mod.

I took one out of my 88 XJ parts Jeep. I removed the little plastic inner piece and heated up and bent the lever above the line where it contact the indicator bezel. Bit by bit. Works great.
