Bought a Comanche with the 4.2 (supposedly) plus Trans questions

Bought an 88 Comanche on Sunday. Supposedly it has the 4.2 inline 6. But... I am not entirely sure how to confirm this.

Also. It needs a transmission. It has the 5 speed. Not sure if it's the B10 or AX15. What transmissions would be a direct replacement? It is 2 wheel drive. I have a donor 4x4 2001 XJ to do the drivetrain and interior swap. But I would like to go ahead and get the Comanche drivable for now.

Here is the vin if that helps.

Thanks guys!

comanches never had the 4.2. its a 4.0, unless someone swapped in a 4.2 for some reason

Go to that site and it will tell you what it came with when you enter the vin. Your may be too old for it to pull but its worth a try.

Thanks for the replies!

Is there anyway that I can tell by some numbering on the block or anything like that?

There should be a casting number on the block and head.
Is there still an emissions sticker underhood driver side firewall?
Being an 88 you will have the BA10/5.
4.2L of that era were still carb'd IIRC.
PCM is under dash driver side of trans tunnel, there should be some kind of code/markings on that as well.
Take a pic of your engine and post it up.

Here is the transmission and the motor!

Can someone please educate me on the transmission? What would be a direct bolt in replacement?

I haven't looked for any numbers on the block yet. Will do that tomorrow when it's dry and day light!

How do you know it's the 4.0 and not the 4.2?

Because it's fuel injected and 4.2s never were.

If you really want to continue bashing your head against a wall:

4.0 Engine date codes

The date code is on the passenger side of the engine, on the block, just forward and up from the distributor on a machined flat surface.

The digits of the code identify:
 1st Digit-The year (8 = 1998).
 2nd & 3rd Digits-The month (01 - 12).
 4th & 5th Digits-The engine type/fuel system/compression ratio (MX = A 4.0 Liter (242 CID) 8.7:1 compression ratio engine with a multi-point fuel injection system).
 6th & 7th Digits-The day of engine build (01 - 31).
1. FOR EXAMPLE: Code * 801MX12 * identifies a 4.0 Liter (242 CID) engine with a multi-point fuel injection system, 8.7:1 compression ratio and built on January 12, 1998.

So it looks like unless my engine was rebuilt and bored to a 4.2 it is a 4.0!
