89 MJ 2x4 to 4x4 swap help
Ok so I have done some reading on this and have everything but the manual transmission from my 99 parts xj cause it's an automatic. Does it matter what year of ax15 transmission I use?
|
You need one from a similar year as the output shaft on the transmission changed at one point from 21 spline to 23 spline.
|
I thought that was only if you are dealing with the Peugeot compared to the ax15?
|
Early ax15 had 21 spline . Just avoid 91 and down count splines can go wrong. Try to year match to transfer case.

Ok I called the local yard and they have a 95 trans. Might get that one if I can't find a cheaper one to go with the 99 t-case. They want $400. Seems high for something that old but that might just be me.

IF that 95 AX-15 is complete with the external slave bellhousing.. worth it!

Lkq is about $200 but you have to pull the trans yourself If your patient enough you might even find a Cherokee for $500 to do your whole 4x4 swap... |
Yeah that's my problem I bought a 99 doner and am using most of it but it's a automatic. The one out of a 95 is out of a wrangler. Anyone know if that is clocked the same as the Cherokee? I read somewhere that they are clocked different which could cause the t case to hit the body

No it's not the same but a wrangler clocking is better than a Cherokee clocking...,
If your going to do rock crawling it's better up than down.... Here's mine with a 93 ax15 with a 96 tcase with the wrangler clocking...it is best with the ax15 crossmember with the 1" drop... Attachment 312564 I did have to bang the trans tunnel a bit to make the tcase bit but I got about a little over 1/2" clearance....the pic doesn't show it because of camera angle Attachment 312565 |
Yeah I'm gonna have a 4.5 inch lift on it but no off-roading for this one. I've been looking for a nice Comanche for 6 years and finally found one. Don't really want to beat on the tunnel. How far did you beat it in?
|
Honestly, just a few taps should do the trick. You should probably hit the underside of your heep with some kind of coating to keep rust away anyways. You won't even notice it.
|
Not much...just enough to have enough clearance for movement...
