You should NEVER EVER try to find out. Running a vehicle that low on the fuel can and will kill the fuel pump. Why? Because when you brake or corner fast the fuel will slosh away from the pump pickup and starve the pump, making it suck air, which is very bad for most automotive fuel pumps.

The light means get gas now. Don't try for how many miles you can go. Assume you can't go much further, because you usually can't. Don't be like Kramer.

In addition to the above, a very low fuel level will draw all the trash in the bottom of the tank into the pump, fuel filters and finally the injectors. Keep your tank above half full and you’ll won’t suck up trash, damage your fuel pump, plug your fuel filter, or run out of fuel.

Not 100% sure, but the low fuel light goes on when you have less than a gallon left.
If you get 20 mpg, that doesn't mean you can drive for 20 more miles. It means you're running lower and lower each second; as others have said, it's an urgent warning.

The fuel also helps keep the pump cool. I always fill up at 1/2 tank with all my vehicles. The only times i let it run low were when i replaced the pump and/or the tank.

Fuel in a hot engine is also HOT as stated previously running low on fuel continuously is hard on the fuel pump because it causes the pump to continuously circulate hot fuel and in turn the pump runs too hot rather than cooling down with extra fuel in the tank to cool what’s coming through down effectively ... may of worded that terribly but I tried
