I have some long hills in my region and was wondering if you can safely coast down them in neutral?

If you have to use brakes during the descent than it would be easy to overwork and overheat them. Engine/transmission resistance is a key function in controlled descents.

There is no good reason to do this. You will use less gas staying in gear rather than coasting in neutral. The PCM closes down the fuel flow in gear, in neutral the engine is idling. Just look at the mpg reading under both conditions.
If you like wasting money and being less safe, then by all means coast in neutral.

Another big problem with coasting downhill in neutral... when you get to the bottom you would have to come to a complete stop to SAFELY put the transmission back in-gear!
Just don't do it. Please.
