Default 2015 Jeep Cherokee 2.4l vs 3.2l engine

Hi All,

New to the forum but not new to Jeeps! I currently own two Jeeps a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (134K) and a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude Edition (58K). I purchased both vehicles from relatives who leased them and I purchased their buyout. I am very pleased with both purchases because I knew the history of the cars and the buyouts were less than 1/2 the purchase price after their 3 year leases.

This brings me to the reason for my post. My niece's 2015 Jeep "Cherokee" Limited (26K) is coming off lease and I want to purchase it for my daughter. The only issue I can see through my research is it has the 4 cylinder 2.4 Liter engine. Reviews seem to say it is under powered and unreliable. Several mechanics have been have told me to run not walk away from the 2.4l Fiat engine. I would appreciate any and all opinions on the engine or other issues experienced.............. I love the Grand Cherokees but do not know much about the Cherokee line.
Thanks in advance!

Bob K

I test drove the 2.4 before I brought my 2014. I laughed all the way over to the cherokee with the 3.2. 91hp and 69ftlb of torque is a pretty big difference. I can't speak to the reliability, of the 2.4, but as far as how it drives and handles, there is a lack of pickup and constantly can't get out of its own way.

I would ask your Niece if you could do a test drive and see for yourself if you could live with it and if it would be suitable for your daughter. I have no experience with Jeeps and I am waiting to order a new Trailhawk Elite in early February so I am still sorting out my options. I do know the 3.2L V-6 is the only engine I will consider as it has been in production for several years and has few complaints that I can find with Google. You could look on the Internet with a Google Search for 2.4L engine problems to see what you can fine on this engine. It has been in production long enough to have a history that should be out there.
