Default To the ones who may be able to advice me ...

Hello Everyone,

i am new on this site, my name is AllanBKT and i come from Bangkok.

I am looking for a second hand Jeep Cherokee and have found 2 which may be of interest, but here i need some help/advice - if possible....

It concern Jeep Cherokee 4.0 AT Limited V6 year 2003 - 90.000 km

My favorite Jeep Cherokee 4.7 AT Limited V8 year 2002 - 117,000 km

Which of the above 2 cars is the "best buy" - there is little price difference, but that it not the point. My worry is which of the 2 models are strongest and most reliable, as well as if there is big difference in service cost and cost of spareparts etc. -any comments is appreciated.

For the "favorite" 4.7 V8 the last service is at 71,000 km in book service. Is it also normal to change timing belt by 100.000 km like by other cars ?
The owner said it was changed, but i am not sure if i can believe - what is the normal lifespan for V6 and V8 engine ?

Thanks for Your time and replies - wish You All a nice day and new week.

Allan ....

The 4.7 sohc V8 has a camshaft in each cylinder head that is driven from the crankshaft by a timing chain. If the owner said he replaced the "timing BELT" he is obviously a liar. It doesn't have one!

Hi ! Thanks for reply. It can be that he thought i did talk about the timing chain and not belt..., any way when do You change it ? I used to drive Honda Accord V6 and have never had a Jeep Cherokee before and i am not the type who fix the car by myself, but prefer to send it to the shop, so my knowledge is quite poor and are sorry if i ask "stupid questions" .... - which of the 2 cars would You suggest me to buy ? Thanks in adv. Allan ....

Except for the front brakes, I have not had a problem with my '04 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/ the 4.7 V-8 w/ 83,000 miles since new. Very strong engine. No complaints. On the other hand the 4.0L 6 cylinder has been in production many years and is one of the best engines ever produced. I have never owned one personally, so I have no input. I think it would be easier to find repair parts for the 6 cyl., if needed, if that matters.

do you have a picture of photo of these two jeeps?

i think the first one is a liberty (they're called cherokee in other countries).

and the second one should be a grand cherokee considering it has the v8.

My choice: V-8. Reason being I need the torque for towing. If that were not the case I would choose the 6 cyl..

Timing chains last much longer than belts. I have a chain on my current 4.0L and it has nearly 500K on the chain. Engine has been rebuilt but the chain was not stretched so was not changed.
BTW Welcome to CF from Texas.

Hi, sorry for late reply.
Thanks for Your reply/feed back....
Originally i come from Denmark but live in Thailand since 1988. It is very nice to get some knowledge from people on this site as to my different questions. I have more or less made my decision to go for the V8 (second one) even i will use it for family and little bit of work as we have some plantation in the South of Thailand, so can be that i can get use of the powers it have down there ....

V6 is selling for appx. 24.000 USD and 25.500 for V8 so compared with Your prices i think it is quite expensive...., but it is o.k. new price for V8 here is around 128.000 USD !!!

My decision was made upon the look, power and comfort as well as aftermarket + suggestions on this nice forum. I will let You be updated when it is parked down stairs .... !!! Wish You All a nice Day and new week, take care ! Allan ....
