Noob from the UK
Hello folks,
I've just come back from the car yard with a 1996 Cherokee (XJ?) 4.0 LTD. My wife has got sick of the snow and demanded a 4x4. Fair enough, she's paying!
She seems a very stately old lady (the jeep) without any visible rust, looks very nice in metallic green and a steal for £1295 and a claimed 88k miles (not sure I believe that). There are of course a couple of things that need sorting out. First up, where can I find an owner's manual? Also, where should I start troubleshooting the dash lights? The digital clock, dials and the bit below the radio don't light up at all.
I'm looking forward to getting this thing up to scratch and taking the beast shooting next week

Welcome to CF. Post your questions in the Tech area for several responses, as for the dash lights you may want to check those bulbs.

Well, the dash lights are fine! It turns out that if your other car is a '90 BMW you can get confused because the dimmer goes the other way on a Jeep
The transmission doesn't seem to be as bad as I feared. Using tips from the forum to unload the centre diff I can change through all the options without any nasty crunches even if I have to reverse for a few yards to get out of part time.
The front tyres are bigger than the rears so I think that'll need to be sorted out sooner rather than later, but for now we'll stay away from part time 4WD and get the t/case oil changed.
So, it looks like the little truck is in full working order!

Dash lights? I'll live and learn
edit: I've just been doing some maths and I reckon our petrol prices are equivalent of $6.60/US Gallon.
