Default New from Texas -- former MJ owner wants XJ

I had a 1989 MJ Comanche 4.0 automatic for a few years in the early 2000's. It was my huntin' truck, and man did I love it! It had a modest lift with 31" tires -- still rode well on the highway and was great at the hunting leases. Would post pics but the ex wife ended up with all of them.

Ex wife drove a '99 Grand Cherokee V6 for about 5-6 years. I loved that thing too, but we had some reliability issues, so I am not sure I want a WJ - and I think the XJ just looks more rugged.

I had to sell the Comanche for financial reasons, and have been driving a VW Jetta for the last 10 years and I am REALLY dying to get back to a Jeep!

I basically want a solid XJ that I can use for any/all bad weather days, hunting trips, etc. My friend nearly got his brand new AWD Subaru Forester stuck at the dove lease this past summer, after a heavy ran turned all that red mud to a sticky mess. So I definitely want something that will give me confidence in situations like that.

I don't have any plans to do any serious offroading or rock crawling of any type. I just want something for the ice storm days and the hunting lease, with good ground clearance.

And, since the XJ has been out of production for over a decade now, I will likely keep the Jetta around, so I still have wheels if the XJ is down for any reason. The good news is I work from home about 99% of the time, so I don't have a daily commute, and my wife is a flight attendant, so worse comes to worse I take her to the airport and keep her car when she's flying, if mine needs to be in the shop.

So where do I start in my quest for a decent, reliable, basic XJ that I can lift modestly and depend on to take me out to the hunting lease and back? (with A/C of course, since this is North TX!!)

I will also say that I am not super mechanically inclined, but I can read, I can learn, I can watch Youtube videos, and I am determined to figure things out!

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum. I am shopping for an XJ as well and find the best starting pint is your local craigslist and auto trader. If you find one that you are interested in, post it in the chat. You will get some good advise on the price and condition. Be detailed and post pics. Good luck with your search.
