Default New to jeeps..

HI everybody, I'm new to jeeps but I bought a 1988 jeep cherokee pioneer and it's cool. I a little confused though because I have never had a 4 wheel vehicle before. Is there an easy way to to test if the 4 wheel drive is working good. And when I put it in 4L it seems to barely move. It's 5 speed by the way here are 2 pics

I'm by no means an expert, but 4 low is meant for slow driving in very rough conditions. 4 high will allow you to move at higher speeds more easily. One way to test if the 4WD is working is to engage it with the lever and turn the wheels sharply, then drive. If it is working you should notice the front wheels pulling. Nice 88 by the way, I recently got an 89 with a 5 speed.
