New to the Jeep thing

My dad gas a 96 Jeep Cherokee Country that he is driving right now as a DD. From doing a little searching It seems it’s a “XJ”? Also it looks like it has a D30 front and D44 rear?
I am very new to this and am searching to see if this would be worth buying from him a while down the road to build up for the trails.

Right now it has 150,000 miles, and the body is perfect. There is barley any rust underneath it as well. So I think it would be a good start....except for allt he chrome lol.

Any input would be great.

As for my dad, he was going to keep it and build it up, but decided he wants a Jeep with a V-8 and suspension work already done that just needs fixed up.

Welcome

Yes, the Cherokee is classified as a XJ. Front axle is a D30. Rear axle won't be a D44. It will have either the D35 or the Chrysler 8.25. Yes, it will be a good rig to purchase off him and turn into an off road rig down the road.

Ic ic, Do they even make a D44 rear? I always heard of the fronts but never a rear.

Someone may have already swapped in a d44. That's the only way you would have one on that model.

That sounds like a promising prospect for a build.

Welcome to the forum.

ahh ic, its all original by the looks of it. A older lady owned it before my dad and was bought at a auction. Installed new tires, new shocks and changed the fluids.

BTW it looks to have a toyota transmission? The trans oil was a brownish color when we got it. Which to me means it could be going bad. But it smelled new:confused: So we changed it, and i heard there was a special additive or certain kind of transmission fluid needed for these transmissions. I forget the name of it (my dad changed it) and all was good. With under 1,000 more miles on the new transmission oil its turning brown again.

Is this normal? Its does not smell hot/burnt.
