New to Jeep Cherokee's
Hello all, after years of wheeling Suzuki Samurai's I feel the need to graduate to an XJ, I have heard that I need to go with a 92' or newer XJ for many reasons.
I am looking to build a get there, get out, get home rig without having to tow.
I am looking at a 1996 XJ, 4.0 auto with 165k miles. I think this is a great platform to start with, do you disagree?
I want to run 32"s or 33's, how much lift do I need?
Do I need to gear change?
I want to run a locker in the rear,ARB would be the at the top of the list, can I get away with anything else?
Again I am new to the Jeep thing, so any advice is appreciated.

Sounds like a great place to start. Xj is a good platform. The 4.0 has the power and torque you need without switching engines and the axles are decent. That 96 sounds like a good one too. Post over in tech for advice. Welcome!

I got my XJ last week, just in time for the snow storm here in MD. I got it for a decent price, needs a new suspension and bigger tires. It's handled great so far.
As for running 32" tires, you will need a lift of at least 4.5". For 33" tires you will most likely need a lift of at least 5.5". I am no expert on this, I got this from Rubicon Express's website (www.rubiconexpress.com). Lifts of this size will require a Slip Yoke Eliminator and a new driveshaft, which will add to the cost.
You might need a gear change to stay in your optimal power range. If you want to recalibrate your speedometer, you can change the speedo gear (not 100% sure how to do that) or get something to change the signal. I saw some at rusty's off road, not sure how well it works (www.rustysoffroad.com)
There is also a gear ratio guide at www.4wd.com under the wheels section which will give you estimate as to what different gear ratios you will need for different tires.
I have no experience with lockers, so I cannot help you there, sorry.
I hope this helps. If i am wrong on anything, someone please correct me.

Picked up a 95' 4 door, 4.0, 5 speed with 157k Saturday, runs strong, just has a few oil leaks here and there but nothing a few gaskets can't fix.
