Im sure im not the frist new guy to ask this question
hello everyone. I'm obviously new here. I just got a question for you guys. I'm looking into buying a jeep cherokee, and i can't seem to find any in my area with under 150k miles. I'm just not sure how mileage stacks up in jeep world. I've always heard that the 4.0l's will last forever. I just wanna try and stay away from buying something that is just gunna sit for a year while i throw money into it. been there done that coming from the vw world. any help, tips, or pointers on what to look for when buying one would be great.
Thanks all,
-Josh

Why'd your VW sit for a year while you threw money at it? Was it something you couldn't figure out on your own? A Jeep with 150k miles is going to need work occasionaly, you can count on it. To say that the egines can go for 300k miles is one thing, but there are hundreds of parts in any vehicle that can and will break. If you're not prepared to work on it, you're going to be disappointed.
BTW, in my opinion, 300k miles is a lot for any gas engine. It would have to be very well taken care of. Trust me, not all 4.0s make it to 300k miles. They'd be the exception and not the rule regardless of what you read from the fan boys.

I bought my jeep about 6 months ago had my gf driving it.. about 4 months ago I flushed the coolant system and when it presurized it sprayed coolent out of a rusted crack in the radiator about 3" long.. I dont know how long it had been running low on coolent but it never overheated or had any problems. if I still had my car it would have had all sorts of problems.. cracked block warped head exc.. not the XJ!!! best thing I have ever bought!! cant wait to do upgrades!!!

Just bought another XJ a week ago (owned a '00 Silver Sport 6" RE lift 33's 3 years ago...sold). 2001 138k White Sport for $2500. Great deal until yesterday when the engine overheated and has a cracked head. I don't know what to do with it yet. Fix it or sell it....?

my '90 has 210k and runs great, the tranny shifts right. I have replaced alternator, battery, the rear main seal, redone the coolant system (minus radiator and water pump) done bearings, ball joints etc but all little stuff really. I wheel her hard and drive her about 25k miles a year

lol!!!
in all honesty, the 4.0 is a great engine, and if properly maintained (routine oilchange / filter, coolant flush) it should last a long time. my 89 had the engine rebuilt at around 200k, ran strong to 350k, then i gave it to my uncle who drove it to central mexico where he lives with no problems at all. great engine imho

thanks for all the info and replies. I know what I'm doing under the hood, but if anyone has ever owned a mk3 vw they know what I'm taking about. they pretty much come messed up from the factory. But its my 3rd one and I'm kinda over the love hate relationship i have with it lol. but again thanks for all the help everyone. Hopefully sooner than later I'll have a real introduction to give you guys with pics of my future jeep. Should be in the next 2 weeks to a month.

As with any vehicle it will require regular maintenance, and will quit on you and or break down if it doesn't get it. But take care of it and it'll be dependable.
