I didn’t expect to find myself here...
Hi all
I Have joined this forum as I am hoping to buy my first Cherokee, a 1992/3 (XJ) 2.5i european model. And this after 29 years of owning almost every other brand. so a real newbie to Jeep but an old hack with car repair and maintenance. Having always loved the looks and build of the XJs, I recently found one advertised for 1500 euros (1800$ maybe), looking clean, rust free and in generally decent condition. the owner (who has a few for restauration) showed me what he has repaired, and told me what it needs: ”at around 2000rpm there is a clatter” from the 200k four cylinder engine- and according to an independent jeep mechanic, it is the crank bearings. Its s great car, and I want to fix it myself, and then enjoy. whaddya think? thanks for letting me in, hoping to be a Jeep nut very soon! Mitchy |
I can't speak for Europe, but if it really needs crank bearings I would not touch that for $1,800. I'm not sure it would be worth that much with a perfectly running engine with 200k miles unless it's 4X4 which you don't make mention of.

Hi robertj
thanks for your reply. Regarding the purchase price, I live on an island in the Mediterranean, and good old cars are becoming difficult to find. A good clean XJ is worth about 2500-3000 here! I’d probably get a similar or better car in my native UK for less than half the asking price of 1500€... I myself can do the bearings, inspection, replacement, etc, but I need some tips and advice regarding the how-tos... I am waiting for a haynes manual, and I shall continue this conversation in the tech forum! Thanks for your help. |
PS it is a manual trans 4x4
