Hey everyone
new to the posts and new to the cherokee.. I have had mine about 3 months now and love it.. I use it as a second car and to pull my boat.. I have a 96' w/ the high output 4.0.. 4x4 w/ the trailering package (that is what I was told - no idea what it intails..)
Anyway, I joined because I have a noise coming from the rearend (i think..) when I turn left.. here to research that..
so.. hi everyone and I hope to contribute someday.

Welcome to CF from Buck in western Washington state. As far as your noise, do you know if your XJ has an OEM limited slip differential? With the trailoring package I'm thinking it might. If so, your limited slip could be getting worn out and making noise or it might just be time to check the fluid level or change it. Could be as simple as gear oil is too low. Things get noisey back there if there is no gear oil on them.

thanks for the quick reply.. I have checked the oil in the rear end and yes, I have been told by a mechanic that I do have a limited slip diff, the truck has 211k on it so I'm sure it is worn! What are my next steps? Is that something a team could do on a weekend?

I've done a complete rear gear change in a weekend. How savvy are with tools? I'm not sure if the OEM limited slips are rebuildable or if you would have to buy a new one. Diff. rebuild kits average around $50 give or take. That consists og all your bearing, seal, shims and such to rebuild the rear end. You'll have to make the call whether this is something you can tackle or if you'll need a mechanic to do it for you. There is no shame in tapping out on a rear diff. rebuild. It's no easy task and it will eat itself if not done right.

Yea... I'll probably have it done.. But I need to make sure I really need that.. I'm not sure yet, because the sound really sounds like something rubbing more than a clunking.. The truck kinda rocks a little in the turn when it happens too.. i lifted it up and tried to wiggle the tires but everything felt and looked rock solid.. so i assumed rear end..

Jakeyman, do you have a Turdy-Five rear or an 8.25?? The reason I ask is this, the 8.25 rear end that was originally in my 91 XJ when I bought it, had a rubbing noise that I couldn't figure out for the longest time. It ended up being "out of round or warped" brake drums. I got a set from an XJ in the local junkyard for $20. Problem solved. I had the new ones checked but, they didn't even require being turned.

I'm guessing that's the 8.25 because it has Dana stamped on it? So I could just have a terrible brake problem? That makes me happy.. I will visit the local junk yard this weekend..
Thanks again
