Hello from Michigan!
Hi all,
I've wanted an xj for a while, and it just so happened that my friend was selling his so I went ahead and bought it.
1998 xj
4.0 i-6
AW4 auto trans
SELEC-TRAC transfer case (part-time and full-time 4wd)
230,000 miles
2 inch add-a-leaf lift in the rear
1 inch spring spacers in the front
American Racing Outlaw II aluminum rims
Kumho Road venture tires
No rust!
I'm a bit weary about the high miles, however the head has been replaced recently (due to that last head cracking) and the p.o took very good care of it (new IAC valve, NSS problem "fixed", and other new parts). I'm sure it'll last me a while.
I don't have any big plans for it, I'm just gonna use it as a 2nd car and winter car.

Welcome!
That ain't high miles for a well maintained XJ
Change oil and trans fluid regularly, use a good oil filter, and run it at least another 100,000.......

I've heard mixed things about changing the trans fluid in the AW4... I checked the color and it looks reddish-brown. I'm not sure how often the p.o changed the trans fluid (if ever) and I was under the impression that if it's never been changed and the color's fine I should leave it alone. What are your thoughts on the trans fluid?

If it comes down to it, and you need the engine rebuilt, Austin Jordan in the Grand Rapids area is hard to beat.
Most likely, you will not need to worry about that, as long as the engine has been taken care of. (Especially oil changes.)
