Hello and Help!
Hi All
I am new to the forum today!
My name is Stuart and I am from Worcesterhsire, England.
I have joined the forum to find out more about Cherokee's before I buy one!
I have read loads of buying guides but feel Forums give more accurate honest opinions of what to look for than these generic guides.
Please can you take the time to point out things to look for when buying, I am looking at three Cherokee's at the moment 2 are 2.5TD manual Sport 1998 models both have done 90K miles and have some history and 1 1999 4.0L Auto this has FSH.
I am new to 4 x 4 cars as all my previous cars have been Triumph Stags, 2000 MK2's. I am fairly skilled DIY mechanic so will be doing most of the servicing etc myself.
Regards
Stuart

You will fit right in. Shy away from the 4cyl, IMO. Stick to the 4.0l ANd in 99 some things were redesingned. Like the exhaust manifold, less prone to cracking I think. If i had to choose between the 3 the 99 I would pick.

I would also go for the '99 4.0. These are solid dependable engines, and found that with most 4cylinder anythings, there is no power and the fuel mileage is almost the same.
Good luck!

Get the 99. i have had 5 or six cherokees now and they last in into the 250-300K miles range and are very durable. you will love it .

Thanks guys for your quick replies, the 4.0L does appeal but the MPG is 20 which at the equivalent $8.20 per Imperial Gallon (4.54 Litres) is really price to run in the UK.
The diesel does 30 MPG according to the guides or is this incorrect?
Went to look at a 2.5TD Sport today but found oil leaking down onto the lower rad hose and what appeared to be a plastic bag wrapped around the lower exhausted shield (probably not plastic but that's what it looked like) but could not reach it due to snow etc to wet to get under the car!

Welcome to the forum, I have owned many jeeps over the years. I tend to love diesels and as DD they would be the best bet for the fuel buck. However the 99 will be the best bang for the buck on power and dependablilty. Good luck with you choice Stuart, I wish we had more Diesel heeps here.
