Gas cap problems

I just recently bought a 2000 Classic and just about every time I get gas, the"Check Engine Light" comes on. Is this super common? Time for a new gas cap?

Are you leaving the engine running while you're getting gas? That could be the cause. JMO
If not, I'd check for any stored trouble codes as stated above.
