New guy from Georgia.
Hi all,
I am in the process of picking up my first Jeep , a 200-k mile 1999 Cherokee sport.4x4/auto.
The first thing I want to do is get it lifted with a subtle lift, nothing radical and was wondering what the best kit/options would be for best handling on the road as the vehicle will have very limited 4wd action until next hunting season starts and even then I won't be doing too much off roading, just lotsa mud and some creek passings.
I just want something subtle but good quality.
If you can provide me any links to specific kits and instructions, I would be very happy.
Also the rear bumper is smashed from a rear ender and needs replaced and I was wondering if there was a decent off road rear bumper that would not break the bank.
Yes, as you can see I have a limited budget and my main goals are tasteful but not cheap upgrades, but nothing too radical if that all makes any sense.
Thanks in advance for any advice and I will be posting pics of my new toy as soon as I get it this week.
I am a German car mechanic by trade but not very familiar working on Jeeps, but I learn fast and it's all nuts and bolts anyways right?
I used to work for a rental car agency in Pittsburgh and developed a great appreciation for 90's models Jeep cherokees as I took them out in the mud, snow, ice and pipelines for "test drives." woo hoo, lot's of good memories and I have always wanted one since then.
Any advice, upgrades, info and warnings you have for me concerning this 1999 model, please feel free to inform me in my new addiction.
I'm in Alpharetta, Ga.
Couple pics.

I'm considering a camo or OD green paint job and was wondering what is the best paint to use for that.
I know there is the rattle can stuff you can get at most sporting goods stores but not sure if that stuff will adhere and stay put.
Yes, I will have alot of stupid questions.......

Ha, I was actually thinking of doing the same paint-job... but was gonna add WW2 Allied colors and such to it too, like the star in the circle on the hood and doors, have 3A on the bumper, etc. Make it a 3rd Armored Div. Jeep. And welcome.

I was looking at different countries camo on their fighter jets and such, and man there are some sweet camo schemes that would look great on a jeep.
yeah, i bought the jeep today and drove it home 30 miles.
It ran really nice, like new, lotsa power and pep.
Took a clay bar to the paint and got all the dirt out of it, looks 100 percent better now.
The only thing I can say that I don't like about this thing is how the water lays inside the wheels after washing them.
You think they would eventually rust through after some time.

Did my first semi big repair today on it.
Had a really badly worn front hub on the drivers front axle so repl it with a new unit, now my oscillating noise and play is gone.
I thought for sure I had bad ball joints due to the play in the wheel but I figured out pretty quick that it was all because of the worn bearings so I guess I don't have to worry about chewing up my front tire or having the bearing totally disintegrate but it was in pretty bad shape as the entire grease seal was gone from the back of the bearing and those little bearing spacers were mostly gone or stuck into the grease that got slung out of the bearing.
The universal joints are in great shape as far as I could tell, but was wishing I had a grease fitting to shoot some grease in.
I feel comfortable letting my Wife drive it now.
This is a cool site and I have been enjoying all the tech discussions and links to repairs with pretty pictures.
