Jost picked up a 89 cherokee laredo. 4.0 4x4.... now i have no manual for it so how do i engage and disengage the 4 wheel drive. use to have a isucu trooper and you had to back up like 20 feet to disengage it. dont want to break anything just yet. i appreciate the help and am looking for clubs in s florida area.

Ya, just pull up on the lever when your at a dead stop. If your in 4H you can push down to take it out. I've done this both stopped and while rolling. For 4L i think you have to have it in either Park or Neutral to get it out of 4L.

I would start off with a good flush of the entire cooling system and a new T-stat...then go from there if you need to.

No, you engage the transfer case just like you said with the lever. Inside the transfer case there is a fork that selects the different modes (2H,4H,N,4L).

I think you are thinking of vacuum disconnect Dana 30 which some XJ's came with.

Roger That Chief!

I am calling up my guy this morning to take care of that. Next project is the power sterring pump. Symptoms: no power steering, has fluid, belt looks brand new, no noises. Do you agree with my diagnoses?

Yeah, most likely the PS pump. Your steering box is just a dummy that takes inputs from the steering wheel and the PS pump. Did you get that 4x4 lever figured out? They are a little different in these rigs than others I've driven.

Not yet was going out to test it last night and the temp past the3/4 mark so i returned home. didnt want to cause any damage. i am getting the thermo changed and getting it flushed. would you recommend these fancy coolants with protectants. this is my first jeep and i wanna learn to fix it right the first time. cant afford to do things twice

Prestone 50/50
I use it in my 95 grand cherokee limited and 89 cherokee limited. After our trip yesterday to Black Mountain prestone held up good my temp gauge never went over 180 degrees. I also have a 185 degree t-stat in mine and my electric fan is on an electrical switch which stays on the entire time i'm driving and while wheeling I leave it on for a couple mins even after I turned my rig off while wheeling. I bet after a new t-stat and flush it your rig should be good to go. Make sure you use 50/50
