Default East TX Here

Hello from East Tx ....... I was in to 4x4 10 years ago and got out. I have been looking at Jeeps and noticed the Cherokee and its capabilities yet do not know hardly any thing about them . I see V8's , L6, I noticed all have leaf rear, coil front, are the 2002 and up any good? is there a article that tells me the differance between years ? Or can you guys tell me a good model to start with? I like the SUV look . My old 4x4 was a 79' Dodge Power wagon 4x4 with the np203 , 410 frt and rear with 35" swampers and a 360 v8 . Thanks in advance

Dave

Take your time and do some research. I think you are combining info from the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee.
The GC has always been coils all around, and came with either a V8 or the I6. The Cherokee always has leafs in rear and coils in front and mostly came with the I6 (although a 4cyl isn't uncommon and early models can be found with a V6). It's last year was 2001, whereas the GC continued.
Although they do share some components, they are different vehicles. First compare the XJ (Cherokee) to the GC to see what you want to build on, then you can get into model specifics.
Welcome to CF.

Wikipedia offers a lot of good info on jeep Cherokee (Xj) they're all a coil-over-axle style front end. They're rather narrow in a good way. They are everywhere. If you're looking into them. Watch out for a rear main swap leak at the very back of the oil pan. Some may not come with air bags. Umm... Also don't buy one unless it has a inline-6 engine. And I recommend anywhere from 91-01 excluded 96' they were a switch over year for quite a few things and the electronics were a chore to troubleshoot.

3.55 is most common. The RMS is a 2pc design and pretty simple to swap, not a deterrent at all.
