Default Deciding the future of my beast

Hello! My name is Scott, and my XJ has seen better days. 284000 miles, and it shows. It was a bright and shining star last winter (though frigid) in the snow, but otherwise I don't offroad so don't really need a Jeep. But I like it, I appreciate the capability, and I would like to restore it to something close to it's former glory. Or get rid of it. I haven't decided which, but I need to figure it out soon. I am moving in January, and either it goes away or goes with me. So here's the rundown

1987 Cherokee, ex-DD now carport ornament.
What's right
4.0L Selec-Trac, goes anywhere when it runs, never needs an oil change.

What's wrong: leaks oil like the Exxon Valdez, no rear window, minor exhaust leak (no rear window improves ventilation), cats (due to no rear window), no heat due to fan broken, turn signals electrical very funky, steering and brakes fail to operate on occasion (possible ignition switch? It did get stolen once or twice), has been run out of oil, potentially more than once, when started the sound scares small children and deaf elderly, but won't start right now anyway, as it needs oil and gas and a jump.

I have only driven it for a few months, I never intended to keep it this long, and I haven't driven it since March, when I got a more practical DD. I just don't know what to do with it. It probably needs either a new engine or a rebuild at a minimum. It needs exhaust work, body work (at least a rear window), and most frighteningly, serious electrical troubleshooting and repair.

Anyhow, hi! If I do keep it, this seems like a great place to get support for the repairs.

Sounds like it's been thru a lot, but the really good biult ones can, and keep on ticking. I bought another '67 Chevy swb about 6mths ago for my wife. I thought it would be cool to have the same truck fixed the way each of us want them. This one sit under a tree in this guys field around many old cars for 8 years. A week later I got time to start it, or try aleast. I found old plug, robbed a dist. cap, wires, put a jug of gas under the truck because tanks nasty after so long, and started via the starter itself. Well, it started first time, idled, and no smoke at all.

Point to this is if you can keep the XJ, give it another chance at life. Top the oil off, and whatever else the engine needs and see what it does. I'm always curious to see what you think is long gone, start and run.

Hey Scott. It sounds pretty sad. Since you didn't/can't keep it up to snuff as a DD, I think you should make it a dedicated trail rig. Or donate/sell it to someone on here that will give that Jeep the attention it deserves. Maybe someone can fix it, or is in need of some of the parts. JMO.
