couldn't take my land rover to hawaii so I bought a jeep
Hi everyone,
I've been lurking around here for the past week. I moved to Hawaii a just over a week ago. I didn't want to ship both my cars from California so I sold my '96 Discovery and replaced it with a '99 Cherokee sport. I know plenty about rovers since I had to work on mine all the time. I'm hoping that won't be the case with my jeep. I already took it to a few places on the big island. Went through some deep water crossings and mud in Waipio Valley. Here is a pic from Makalawena beach. It's pretty much a locals only spot since you need a 4x4 to get there easily.
From what I know it has a rusty's off road 4.5in lift kit. some sort of Bilstein with remote reservoirs ontuesday front a pro-comp shocks in the rear. It has two steering stablizers. The tires are 32in BFG km2s. It seems pretty capable for anything I've tried to tackle so far. It has a push button rear locker but I have yet to try it. I'd like to see how it will compare to my old rover on a 4 in lift and Detroit true tracs.
I hope to learn a lot more from you guys. Thanks for putting up so much info. I hope I made a good purchase. Let me know what you think.
In case the pic doesn't show just copy and paste: http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6075/...4d97388b_b.jpg

Welcome from Texas. Sweet jeep, and looks like a beautiful area. I've never owned a rover, but i'm sure you'll be very happy with an XJ. Any mod plans?

Hi! Welcome! It's good to see someone on the Big Island! I live in the Puna area. I know of one other member here on the island (AutoBotXJ) that I have met. The good thing is that if you need parts, these Cherokee are a dime a dozen here, the bad thing most of the body parts are rusted thru. Mine has been very reliable (even with a 170,xxx miles on it). I try to get over to the west side of the island once a month or so to do Costco run and hang at the beaches over there. Well take care and PM me if need any thing.
