Camping Cherokee
Hi all,
I'm from Upstate SC and have some time off, so i'm trying to do some adventuring until late July.
i just picked up a '99 cherokee laredo with 93000 miles on it and am planning to use it as my summer adventure vehicle. I'm primarily going to use it for hiking/camping/fishing stuff, not necessarily off-roading, so i'm not really looking for something crazy to do. i've already done some minor work (fixed the liftgate, new battery, painted the bumpers), but it's the other plans i have that i figured i'd ask you guys with some experience.
i'm looking at putting an Olympic Top Hat Rack on the roof for my gear. I can only find that on Quadratec.com so far (the ones for the cherokee). i like the simplicity and it looks like a good rig (any comments/experience with the product or the dealer?)
I'll be putting on Michelin 235/70R16 A/T2 tires. not looking to lift so i'm not getting larger tires than needed, and i'll still be doing plenty of highway driving, so i figured this was a good mix tire. plus i used to work for Michelin, so i'm a little biased. (comments/experience still very much welcomed)
my final installment is some sort of brush guard. primarily somehting simple to install but not rediculously heavy duty. mostly somehting i can trust to protect the nose of my truck and that i can also tie stuff off to. I like some of the Warrior Product ones, but once again i have little experience with these types of products so i'm looking for your guy's input.
thanks a lot! maybe i'll see some of you guys out there in beautiful SC.

Welcome to CF from Winston in TN. I do not have any experience with any of those products, but someone on this forum will be able to provide some info. Sounds like you have a fun summer lined up.

Yeah overlandxj's rig is one of the nicest all around rigs I have seen. Looks nice and it's functional. Someday I want mine to be like that. I want mind for hunting, fishing camping and trails but not much into rock crawling.

Hi Griff..
Your on the right track with not worrying about a lift at the moment, you'll probably find that a small one will suffice if you need one at all.
Why do you feel you need a roofrack? Honestly, i dont use mine much. Save the money.. that could get you part way out to the Rockies. Throw your gear in the back and go see the country... you'll see where you need to update equipt for the rig and camping gear soon enough. Everyones requirements for function and comfort are different... you'll need to see where your own priority's lie.
XJ's arent known to be fuel misers, think twice about any weight/drag you add to the Jeep. It all takes away from fuel mileage. Maintenance is top priority for an Adventure rig.
