99 Classic
Bought a 1999 Cherokee about a month ago. Appears to have spent most of its life in very dry climates, very clean and rust free underneath, but the clear coat and paint have seen better days. Ive used this forum a bunch since I got it and I decided to make an account finally. Since I've owned it just been doing little things. Gonna be driving from Idaho to Alaksa next month, should be fun (done the drive before, just not a jeep).
Fixed dash lights (rear window switch was shorting out) Changed all the fluids (side note- is there anyone out there that makes diff covers for these things with drain plugs on them? Would rather not have to pop the cover off or suck out the fluid every time I changed the fluid, but it is what it is) Spark plugs New speakers and amp Just replaced the leaf springs, coils, and shocks this past weekend. Took a while but I followed the advice found here and it wasn't too bad. PB Blaster was my friend. Went with Dorman 929-301 leaf springs in the rear and Moog CC782 coils in the front. Gotta get an alignment still but it doesn't look too bad. Gives it a bit of an upcountry lift which is what I wanted. If you could change the suspension over a weekend it's definitely a dry state XJ; compare with the 1/2-day it took me to remove the front shock lower mount bolts - & that's just due to rain, never mind salt.
Many, if not most, aftermarket diff covers have drain plugs, not cheap - but do have other benefits. |
The ARB covers are really nice.
Magnetic drain plug, a magnetic dip stick, and a flat fill port. Allen head bolts are recessed into the cover. |
